Lubno, Klein, and Wood Pick Up Support Divisions Wins on Opening Night at Langley Speedway

Hampton, VA – Some form of Late Model Stock Car racing may be the premier racing division at your local short track but we all know it takes more than that to put on a weekly show. Hell, sometimes the support divisions are the ones who put on a better show if we are being honest. Grand Stocks, Super Trucks, and UCAR (Bando’s & Legends also kicked off their season as well, recap coming soon) kicked off their season over the weekend. We saw some familiar faces back in victory lane as well as some new ones. The best part was each division had a great turn out of cars and we hear that a few more are still being built.

Let’s start by taking a look at the Pepsi Grand Stock division. Sammy Gaita, who missed a good portion of 2018 due to an injury, came back strong this season and grabbed his first pole award laying down a 17.705-second lap. Defending champ, Paul Lubno, would take the green from the fourth position. However, Lubno had no plans staying there for too long and it showed once the race went green.

To 40-lap feature saw three different leaders with Gaita being the first. His Frontline Vapes number 24 looked strong early but faded as the run went on. Tim Wilson took advantage of the opportunity and took over the lead, leaving the door open for Lubno to take second. Wilson did all he could to hold back the seasoned veteran but there was just not enough left in the tank (figuratively speaking) as Lubno was able to muscle his way into the top spot a handful of laps later. Once that powder blue number fourteen got the clean air and track, it was lights out.

“I got into the back of the seventeen a little too hard,” Lubno said in victory lane about the pass for the lead. “I rolled out of the throttle to let him get straightened back up then we went back to racing like we should do it.” Lubno went on to thank all of his crew and sponsors for making things happen. This past weekend is more than likely just a preview of things to come for the Pepsi Grand Stocks and Paul Lubno. Is there anyone out there who can stop his reign on the division? Tim Wilson, Sammy Gaita, Michael Waters, and dale Nicholls rounded out the top five finishers.

Jacob Carr, defending Super Truck champion, looked to be the guy to beat as the Harris Truck Shop Super Trucks kicked off their season is past weekend. Carr was quickest in qualifying earlier in the afternoon posting a 19.054-second lap. Rick Poust, making his return to the division in a Chase Elliot Mt. Dew inspired paint scheme, gave Carr a decent run for his money on the initial start from the outside but, eventually fell into line to continue his chase. Ronald Klein, last years Enduro champion, made his return to the truck division for the first time since 2017, looked to be the fastest man around as the laps clicked off and with the help of a couple of timely cautions, Klein was a true contender for the race lead.

With just five laps to go, Klein was able to methodically work his way under Carr and take the lead. Carr would get one final shot at Klein as the third and final caution would wave one lap twenty-three, setting up a two-lap shoot out. As the caution truck peeled down pit road, Klein nailed the restart, got the separation he needed, and went on to take the win. Rick Poust, Jacob Carr, Paige Cain, and Keith Wheeler rounded out the top five.

Brandon Wood, who was forced to sit at least half of the 2018 season out after a major crash with a lap car destroyed his car, came back this year faster than ever. After qualifying on the pole it looked like Wood was going to cruise to a caution free victory in a dominating way. However, with about five laps to go, things got really interesting, really fast.

The first (bogus) caution of the night came a car came to a stop on the apron, maybe the grass, then magically got going again. From there, like the old saying goes, “cautions breed cautions.” On the following restart as the field sailed into turn one, Dean Ballew & defending series champion Austin Davis made contact which sent Davis around and Ballew to the rear. Wood had to survive a couple more restarts as Davis ended up in more trouble at the hands of Mike Farley who had trouble getting going. Not sure if he spun the tires, missed a shift, or just got caught sleeping either way, Davis tried to go low to get around, Farley tried to go low to get out the way and the two met in an unfortunate manner.

Luckily for Brandon Wood, the restarts were not an issue and he was able to hang onto the lead and pick up his first career UCAR win. Dean Ballew was able to rebound to a second place finish, Courtney Shiflett, Austin Davis, and Tyler Borden rounded out the top five.

Langley Speedway will be back in action this weekend Saturday, April 6th with twin Modified features, Super Street action, Pro Six, Karts, and Enduro’s. Grand Stands will open a 2:00 PM. Qualifying at 4:30, racing actions scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Mason Bailey Dominates Southside Speedway J.M. Wilkinson Opening Night; Snaping Chris Dodson’s Six Race Win Streak

Midlothian, Virginia– You could have not asked for better weather yesterday just south of the state capital. Light cloud cover, a nice low breeze and about 70 degrees all day long. Something Southside Speedway was probably owed after dealing with the amount of “The R Word” that came through the state last year. Fans and drivers alike packed the pits and the grandstands to make Opening Night 2019 one for the record books.

Mason Bailey was the fastest man in town in both divisions he raced in last night during the final round of practice, and for those who might not know Southside Speedway uses their final practice round as a form of group qualifying known as “Practifying.” It took Bailey just seven laps to lay down a 14.816 and take the pole position away from 2018 Rookie of the Year, John Goin. Chris Dodson, Howie Disavino, and Bugs Hairfield rounded out the fastest five qualifiers. Only the top two were inverted.

Starting the 40-lap feature on the outside front row was no problem for the young Chesterfield native. He was able to take the lead early from Goin, just before problems arose in turn three involving Howie DiSavino and Chris Johnson. Both cars ended up with some front end damage, however, DiSavino was the only one that did not return to the race. The caution set up the night’s first cone restart where Bailey elected to stay on the bottom, Goin took the chance to go topside but had some issues, and pardon the pun, getting ‘goin.’ Somehow he only fell back to fourth.

That allowed Bailey a clean shot in and out of two, which allowed him to open up a decent amount of space between himself and the rest of the field. Building almost a full second lead over the rest of the field allowing them to battle things out while he drove away. The second official caution of the evening came when Eddie Johnson and Justin Martz make contact, and by contact I mean Martz goes up and over the left front fender of Johnson. Just before that on the other end of the track, however, John Goin was able to get around Hairfield for second, setting up another great restart between two young drivers, so we thought!

Once the green was displayed things went downhill quick for Goin. Both he and Bailey spun their tires, which stakes up the field behind them. However, Goin got the worst end of the deal because he also had a left front tire go down. Once the carnage was cleared Cameron Jarrel found himself facing the wrong direction. Luckily for everyone involved, no one received any serious damage. Bailey once again elected to take the bottom on the ensuing restart but it was called off after race control deemed Hairfield jumped the start.

Once we finally got going again Bailey did a phenomenal job clearing the field and leaving the veterans to battle things out. Dodson was able to clear Hairfield for second but by the time he got some open track to work with, Bailey was long gone and collecting his second checkered flag of the evening and snapping one of, if not the longest, winning streaks in Southside history. Dodson, who had won the previous six J.M. Wilkinson Opening Night’s finished second, Bugs Hairfield, Michael Sutphin, and John Goin rounded out the top five finishers.

Ethan Ayers Wins UCAR Opener; Proves Yet Again to be the Division of Excitement

Beejay Anderson was the quickest of thirteen cars during practifying clocking in at 16.553 (72.487 MPH). However, the invert was not on his side once he pulled a six out of the cooler, handing the front row to Ronnie Vance and Joshua Thomas.

Vance again used the invert to his advantage and took off running when the green flag was displayed. Behind him was a completely different story, I am not sure if hornets nest is the right description because they took it three wide early, which cause some contact and damage. Ryan Paul’s No. 5 car probably took the worst of it after getting hit in the back and taking what looked like the front bumper cover of Brookfield with him. Somehow we remained green.

While all that was going on around mid back, Ethan Ayers was on the hunt for the lead. He was able to close the gap and make the pass just past the halfway point of the feature. Ayers had to hold off the rest of the field for a handful of restarts with less than ten laps to go but, he was able to do so and take home the victory

Chris Johnson Capitalizes on Initial Start to Capture First Late Model Win of 2018 at Southside; Ethan Ayers & Ryan Paul Split UCAR Twin Bill

Midlothian, VA – Howie Disavino, the 17-year-old Chesterfield native who just celebrated a birthday last week, surprised everyone when we laid down the fastest lap in qualifying earlier in the afternoon with a 14.959-second lap time. Averaging 80.139 MPH Disavino’s lap was just nine-thousandths of a second better than Southside veteran Chris Dodson. He would, however, invert the top four qualifiers handing the top spot over to sophomore driver Mason Bailey.

When Jodie Adkins displayed the green flag to the field Bailey either spun the tires or missed a gear on the start. This allowed Chris Johnson, who started on the outside pole, the opportunity to take the lead going into turn one and that was about all she wrote for the top spot. As things got settled in upfront Bailey found himself going the wrong way while Disavino mounted his charge back to the front. Chris Johnson and Disavino would check out over the field.

The 40-lap feature went caution free with some pretty action-packed racing for the third position on back. Bailey found himself under fire several times throughout the feature as he slid back to the seventh position where he ultimately finished. Veteran racers Bugs Hairfield, Eddie Johnson, and Chris Johnson ran nose to tail for several laps before Dodson got around the No. 43 for fourth.

With ten laps to go, Disavino really turned up the wick and his assault on race leader Chris Johnson. He would get into turn one just a little too hot and go into a four-wheel slide, ultimately killing any chance he would have at the win. Bugs Hairfield, Chris Dodson, and Eddie Johnson rounded out the top five.

 

Ethan Ayers was the second fastest qualifier earlier in the afternoon during qualifying. He would take the green flag in the third position after the four-car invert and found himself in the lead early. Ayers opened up more than an eight-car advantage before the first of two cautions flags flew. Dillon Devenny and Cameron Ruggles would take the cone and restart on the outside. However, Ayers was able to keep the lead and go on to win the race. Dillon Devenney, Joshua Thomas, Trevor Stinson, and Ryan Paul rounded out the top five which just happened to be how many cars were inverted for race two.

Paul, who was making just his second UCAR start due to the twins, used the invert to his advantage to jump out to an early lead. He would have to hold off Ayers just twice on restarts one coming immediately after the green and another on lap four when debris brought out the yellow.

The rear bumper cover of the No. 03 machine of Zachary Lindsey was the reason for the lap four caution and at the same time that is when we noticed the No. 72 of Joshua Thomas with a rear bumper cover falling off as well. Race officials decided that he needed to come down pit road to remove it before it fell off on the racing surface, he would ultimately battle back to an eighth-place finish.

On the ensuing restart, Ryan Paul struggled to get going and Ethan Ayers almost made him pay. The restart also allowed Michael Chapman to jump up to the third position. Paul would ultimately be able to hang onto the top spot over Ethan Ayers, Michael Chapman, Dillon Devenney, and Cameron Ruggles.

Chris Humblet Dominates Modified Opener at Dominion; E.J. Kinney Back in Victory Lane in UCAR Feature

Thornburg, VA – Eric Fowlkes was the fastest car in group qualifying this past weekend at Dominion Raceway as the IMCA style modifieds took to the high-banked, .400-mile oval for the second to last time in 2017. Fowlkes earned the pole by laying down a 15.819 (91.03 mph) second lap. He would, however, take the green flag in the third position after inverting the top three on the grid. Handing the front row over to defending track champion Chris Humblet. Adam Medek would keep his second-place qualifying position while points leader Jimmy Humblet started fourth and Tony Fowler rounding out the fastest five qualifiers.

The invert seemed to be just what the doctor ordered for Chris, who wasted zero time jumping out to the lead, commanding the pace of the race. An early caution slowed the pace of Chris Humblet, giving pole winner Fowlkes another shot to get around the defending champ but could not do so. He and Jimmy Humblet would settle in line clicking off laps.

The field would be slowed two more times due to the yellow flag. The third and final time after the entire front stretch was blocked and multiple cars received damage. Things got wild when Adam Medek got loose off turn four in front of half the field with fewer than ten laps to go. Ends up over correcting and heading back towards the outside wall when mayhem ensued. Mike Bedner, Bubba Johnston, Tony Fowler, and Ryan Pritt all got a piece of the action that brought out the red flag. Medek was the only one not able to rejoin the field.

Fowlkes looked to capitalize on what would be the final restart. With a solid run off of turn four Fowlkes would lead at least one of the 35-laps before a small hiccup allowed Chris Humblet to take the top spot back. With not enough laps left on the board, Fowkles would be forced to settle with a second place finish over Jimmy Humblet, Bubba Johnston, and Warren Lipford – who by the way was able to replace the motor in his No. 43 modified that he lost earlier in the day.

The Modifieds will be back in action one final time this season on October 21st where a champion will be crowned.

E.J. Kenny found his way back to Radley Chevrolet Victory lane this past weekend after starting on the front row in the 25-lap UCAR feature. Kenny was the fastest car in group qualifying over Daniel Thomas, Aaron Donnelly, Alex Ayers, and Kris Kurtz. Kenny and Thomas would simply swap spots on the front row after the invert was determined to be the top two.

Thomas, who was a regular competitor at Southside Speedway this year, proved that he earned his position at the front of the field when the green flag was displayed leading the first twelve circuits. In a race that only witnessed two caution periods, but a ton of action throughout the field, Kenny was able to work his way around the No. 72 of Thomas for the top spot and it was pretty much game over after that. The win was Kenny’s third official victory of the 2017 season. Daniel Thomas was able to hang onto a second place finish in just his third start this season. Don Schumann and Alex Ayers – another Southside Speedway regular –would finish third and fourth respectively. Rounding out the top five finishers was the No. 31 of Aaron Donnelly who clinched the 2017 UCAR track championship with 19 starts, 6 wins, 14 top fives, and 19 top ten finishes.

Veteran Eddie Johnson Wins Southside Speedway 75-lap Feature Over Rookie Standout Mason Bailey – Jamie Hite Wins UCAR Feature

Midlothian, VA – For the second time in 2017 Southside Speedway ran a 75-lap feature for their premier division that put on a hell of a show for the fans. In a division where the past several year’s drivers have been used to running 30 to 40 lap sprints, Southside Officials decided that two races this year would be more laps – here at The Weekly Racer think both events were amazing. With the amount of young rookie talent mixed in with seasoned racing veterans, it would be a sure show of who could manage tires.

Mason Bailey, coming off his third win of the season last time out, entered the weekend as the new found points leader and was the fastest man in town. Technically qualifying on the pole with a 14.831-second lap of record. Bailey would take the bonus point for the pole and have to start second to Eddie Johnson after the infamous Southside Speedway invert. J.D Eversole, Grayson Cullather, and Andrew Dean would make up the rest of the fastest five cars or the evening’s race.

Once the green flag was displayed to the field, Mason Bailey wasted no time jumping out front of Eddie Johnson, using the outside line mind you and setting a pace he thought was needed to stay out front. The race would surprisingly see only two leaders and three caution periods for minor contact and spins from drivers. Lane Janosik seemed to pull the bad luck straw this weekend because he was involved in two of the three yellow flags after qualifying ninth on the evening. Contact with the number 26 of John Crews out of turn two would ultimately end both drivers’ night early.

Bailey and Eddie Johnson were clearly the class of the field Friday night and it honestly looked like Bailey was going to sneak away with his second victory in a row and fourth on the season as he was strong each restart, clearing Eddie at least by turn three. Eddie, being the veteran racer that he is, did not let this worry him as he seemed to have the better car on the longer runs, putting a full court press on the rear bumper of Bailey about ten or so laps into the run.

Behind them, however, was plenty of action on the tight .333-mile oval. Brad Davis, J.D. Eversole – until he pulled down pit road and ended his night early – and Grayson Cullather were all at one point, either nose to tail or door-to-door battling hard for position. The final caution of the evening would come on lap sixty-two after Andrew Dean and Howie DiSavino made a little contact, which ultimately sent DiSavino around. This happened just after Johnson help persuades Bailey to use the top groove through turn four to take the lead coming to the stripe.

With Johnson and Bailey again lining up on the front row Mason needed to get a good restart if he wanted to power his way back to the lead on the outside. When the green flag was displayed it almost looked like Bailey spun his eight-inch Hoosier tires which were all Eddie needed to cruise to victory. Behind them in the closing laps, however, Michael Sutphin, who was involved in the nights first yellow, had made his way all the way back up to the front of the field in the tire tracks of Chris Johnson – who by the way started in the back of the pack – to earn themselves a top five finish.

“We were a little upset we weren’t able to put our Pearson Dodge on the pole,” Johnson said. “Ended up qualifying second and he [Bailey] drew a two so we ended up starting on the pole. You know a lot of times out here the outside line goes at the start, you got fresh tires and you get a good grip off two. I just settled in there and tried to save my tires but stay close enough to put some pressure on him.”

After the first caution of the race, Johnson elected to take the cone and start on the outside of Bailey to give the top groove one more shot.

“We took off on the outside there,” Johnson mentioned about the first restart of the night. “I was hoping we could get up to him and battle a little bit more there but he was pushing a little bit of water out of his car and it was getting on my windshield plus there wasn’t as much grip on the top as we wanted so I just settled back in. That’s when I noticed my car kinda came back to me a little better than his did.”

With twelve laps to go either Bailey’s car started to fade or the constant pressure of that blue 43 got to the rookie as Johnson was able to finally stick a nose to the inside.

“We got behind him after that second caution, got real close behind him and that’s when he started to really slow down,” explained Johnson. “He was starting to really hold me up and I finally worked my nose under him and we went on to win the race. He did a really good job holding on, though. I was giving him everything I had.”

“I would really like to thing Mr. and Mrs. Hughes for bringing out the 43 Dodge and bringing their car out here for probably as many years as I have been coming out here. This is what they live for, to come out here and race. I am just glad I can do a good job for them. I want to thank Pro Tech Fab, Crazy Greek for bringing some pizza’s out here to eat on race night. All the guys on the crew, my son [Chris Johnson] for helping me set it up and everyone who supports me.”

 

Jamie Hite (#12) was victorious in the evening’s 25-lap UCAR feature. After qualifying second with a time of 17.088 to Ethan Ayers (#87) – 17.062, Hite was the lucky one so to speak when the invert pill was pulled as he got to keep his second place starting spot on the grid when the green flag dropped. Ayers would draw a three, which should have put Korey Lawson (#04) on the pole as he was the third fastest qualifier. However, Lawson and Anderson (#13) had their times disallowed after failing post-qualifying inspection. This would hand the lead over to the #51 of Devenney.

The race would only be slowed by one caution as Jamie Hite went to cruise to victory. Fast qualifier, and eventual second place finisher, Ethan Ayers tried to take the lead on lap fifteen with a power move into turn one but Hite used the classic cross over move to retake the lead out of two. Michael Chapman, who is no stranger to victory lane at Southside Speedway, was running a different car this week and was looking to make things interesting early. However, he would eventually fall back outside of the top five with a little more than five laps to go.

Both the Late Models and UCAR’s will be back in action Friday, August 18th with 40 & 25 lap features respectfully.

Doug Barnes Jr Sweeps; UCAR Order Shuffled

Thornburg, VA – Doug Barnes Jr qualified with fast time of 15.725 to set on the pole at Dominion Raceway and drew a three on the invert to put Timmy Phipps on the point to start the first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model race of the night.

Off the start Jeff Oakley fell to third with Barnes moving up into second and within five laps he was putting pressure on Phipps. A handful of laps later and Barnes Jr was able to get by Phipps and Tyler Hughes started working on Oakley for third place and sitting just behind them was Logan Jones and Macy Causey making it a four way battle for the position. Halfway through the first race and Barnes Jr had almost a four second lead while Hughes made it three wide for third and Phipps got cycled back to fifth. Tyler made quick work of Oakley for second but Barnes Jr had a lead of over four seconds with just 15 laps remaining. Barnes Jr cruised to the win for his second in a row in a quick caution free race.

For the second race the field took the mandatory minimum invert of eight cars so Michael Hardin and Cameron Burke start on the front row. Right off the bat Oakley struggled to get going falling back to tenth after starting sixth. Barnes Jr and Hughes wasted no time moving up through the field and fifteen laps in they were up to second and third. Just five laps later Barnes Jr got Burke loose and him and Hughes slid by. Shortly after the yellow flew for Burke going around in turn two and Macy Causey comes within a hair of running into his stopped car but took no damage. Hardin came down pit road after falling through the field and Oakley and Bruce Anderson also came down to try and make some adjustments. On lap-38 Causey was able to take the fifth position from Burke and he pulled into the pits a couple later to end his night. The caution came out for Hardin in an incident involing ony himself.

Off the restart Barnes Jr pulled away from Hughes but he was able to get to the inside of Barnes Jr and some great side by side racing went on for five laps with Tyler grabbing the lead after some heavy contact down the front stretch, which wound up putting debris on the track and the caution coming out. Under the caution Hughes had a tire blow out ending his run for the win. Off the final restart Logan Jones got chance to get by Barnes Jr but Doug kept his hot rod out front to take his second win on the night and third in a row.

On the restart Barnes Jr continued to show his car was the one to beat jumping out by eight lengths but behind Hughes in second the racing was very close. Phipps, Burke, and Causey were in a three way battle for third place. Causey kept the pressure on Burke but he was able to run through the corners a little better to keep his spot.

UCAR Feature
Over in the UCAR division EJ Kenny ran the fastest time in practifying with a 19.574 second lap but pulled a six out of the bag so Cameron Ruggles would inherit the pole position and Ed Johnson to his outside. Aaron Donnelly took the lead on lap five and Kenny followed him by Ruggles and quickly took over first from him. Halfway through their feature and he was out to almost a four second lead but the field would get bunched back up a few laps later for a caution with the wheel of Blaine Schumann separating from his vehicle. The caution didn’t help too much though with Kenny finishing five seconds head of Donnelly. Unfortunately EJ Kenny was disqualified in post race tech and received a two race suspension for “conduct detrimental to auto racing”. Aaron Donnelly took the win for the night with guest Radley Victory Lane reporter Ryan Pritt finishing second.

Eddie Johnson Wins Late Model Feature at Southside Speedway Friday Night

Midlothian, VA – With no rain in the immediate forecast racing returned to the southside of Richmond this past Friday night. With more than two weeks off of racing fans and drivers alike were ready to get back at it with some good ole fashion short track racing. With the sun being out and temperatures being pretty high it slowed the field down just enough to where the top six cars were only separated by a couple hundredth of a second. Eddie Johnson laid down the fastest lap time in the final round of practice with a 15.211 to earn the pole point. Daniel Thomas, Bugs Hairfield, Mason Bailey and Alex Brock rounded out the top five starters. Johnson pulled the number three pill handing the point over to Mr. Hairfield.When it was time get going, Bugs was able to clear the number 99 machine of Thomas down the back stretch to lead lap one and pick up right where he had left off the last time the cars were on the track, at the front of the pack. Daniel Thomas seemed to be the odd man out on the outside line as Johnson was able to get around him on the bottom and eventually bringing young Mason Bailey along with him. Thomas would eventually settle into the fourth position with a hungry Alex Brock and Chris Dodson behind him.

Took Johnson just nine circuits to work his away around Hairfield for the lead with Mason Bailey really closing the gap. The race was slowed for the first of two cautions on the night when we look back from the leaders and see that Alex Brock and Chirs Dodson had made contact and were facing the wrong way just at the stripe. Both drivers were able to pull away and rejoin the race. However, Brock’s luck would not get any better when he was caught up in another pile up – this time involving Matt Ashworth and Disavino – down the back stretch, pinning his car into the outside wall and causing some damage. Bugs Hairfield was one of the many cars to bring his car to the attention of his crew during that caution period and eventually calling it quits for the night.

Once the track was clean and the cone was set it was back to green flag racing. Bailey, electing to try his luck on the outside for that start got the jump of his life; too good of a jump as a matter of fact. Before race control could do anything over the radio Bailey looked to back off the throttle and give the lead back over to Johnson. The two would make contact into one just seconds later causing the leader to get sideways. Somehow Eddie gathered the car back up and retained his position at the front of the pack.

Once things got settled down Johnson just had to manage his three car advantage over second place while drivers went to work behind him. Daniel Thomas, who posted the second-fastest time of the day had quietly spent all night in the top five and was able to lock down a third place finish. Last years Grandstock sensation and Late Model rookie, Lane Janosik, had his hands full in the closing laps running fourth working to keep Chris Dodson at bay. Once the checkers were displayed, Janosik was successful and took fourth place over the Southside legend.

The victory was Johnson’s first trip back to victory lane since winning the season finale in August of 2016. In addition, Johnson won this exact race just one year ago. The victory over Mason Bailey and Chris Dodson will surely help his efforts in the points.

The two spent a couple laps battling hard for position and putting on a great show for the fans in the stands. By lap nineteen the lead was Chapman’s and he never looked back. Hite was able to hang onto the second position 25-laps later. Beejay Anderson would finish right where he started the race in third with Dillon Devenney and Frank Silva – the races biggest mover – rounding out the top five.
