Nick Smith Goes Flag to Flag in Dominating Legends Feature; Ryley Music Returns to Dale Lemons Victory Lane

Hampton, VA – Nick Smith grabbed the pole out of 11 cars for the 25 lap feature. Ryan Matthews, Spencer Saunders, Connor Jones and Ryan Center were the fast five in qualifying.

As the green flag was waved, the field sailed into turn one side by side. Coming out of turn two, Smith would get the edge and take the initial lead. Saunders followed behind him while Matthews fell in line to third. It didn’t take long for Matthews to get second back as he went right around Saunders in turn two on lap two. Jones also wanted to take position away from Saunders as he was on his back bumper as well. Lap eight and Smith had already built up a half a straightaway lead over Matthews. Going into turn one, Jones got a good run to the inside of Saunders and took third away going into turn two.

Carter Wheedon and Ryan Center had a heated battle for the fifth position as they made contact in turn one result long in Center going for a spin. No caution came out as all cars kept forward momentum and continued going. With Five laps to go Nick Smith had clean racetrack in front of him. Matthews did all he could do to catch Smith but couldn’t pull it off. Checkered flag flew and Nick Smith picked up his first Cycle City Corp Legends win of the season. Ryan Mathews, Connor Jones, Spencer Saunders, and Carter Wesson rounded out the top five.

Cycle City Corp Bandoleros

Cody Bryant captured the pole with a time of 21.171 over a field of seven cars. Ryley Music, Jacob Derrick, Wyatt Philyaw and Logan Clark were the fast five in qualifying. When the green flag flew to start the race, Bryant didn’t get a good start at all allowing Music to take the lead heading into turn one. Bryant would fall to second with Derrick third.

A three car battle began for fourth position between Clark, Philyaw and Paynter. With the intense battle, Paynter and Philyaw made contact coming out of turn four sending Paynter for a spin to bring the first caution out on lap three. As the field regrouped coming to the green, Music got another great start and took charge into turn one. Derrick, however, did not get the start he wanted and Clark went to his inside to take third away. Derrick would fall off the pace and fall to sixth position before getting back up to speed.

Paynter and Philyaw began battling for fourth and continued to make contact with each other. Derrick looked to get in on the battle and made it a three car battle for fourth. With just three laps to go, Bryant looked to make a late race move on Music, but the veteran Music knew better to leave the bottom lane open and didn’t allow Bryant to get past him. Checkered flag flew and Ryley Music picked up his fourth win of the season. Also coming to the checkered flag, the battle for fourth got even more physical coming out of turn four. Paynter and Philyaw made contact again, but this time sending Paynter nose first into the inside wall. Though Paynter’s car was removed from the racing surface on the hook, she was able to pop out of her car quickly and exit under her own accord.

Nick Smith & Mark Wertz Split Smithfield Food Twin Bill at Langley Speedway

Hampton, VA ­­– Conner Hall from Hampton, VA was the man to beat early in the afternoon at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model division. After being forced to take several weeks off due to various rainouts, Hall clocked in 15.645-second lap (90.892 MPH) to earn his first pole award of the year. Per usual, when you have twin features on the evening the first race is rather calm. Drivers tend to do a lot of riding, plenty of room is given by all, and we all go into the eight car invert happy – race one was no different this weekend at Langley Speedway. Hall and Smith would spend the first lap door-to-door battling for the top spot, however, it would be Conner leading the first four of the 75-lap feature. Nick Smith would mount a charge the following lap and take the lead from Conner on lap five a drive away from the rest of the field and crews to victory.

Behind them, however, witnessed some amazing racing between some of the young guns and seasoned veterans of the sport. The biggest shock of the first race came on lap 49 when pole sitter Conner Hall went up in smoke to bring out the races first and only caution. On the ensuing restart, Nick Smith made quick work of the field and powered back into the lead over Danny Edwards Jr., Mark Wertz, Danny Edwards, Justin Carroll, Brenden Queen, Thomas Marks, and Rodney Boyd completed the top eight.

“This race means so much to me,” Smith said after the race in victory lane. “We worked our butts off, I didn’t know if we had a win in us. I thought, the hard work is going to pay off and it did so will see what happens in this second race. What else can I say, great race and glad to be back in Victory Lane.”

Following the NASCAR rule book the top eight cars were inverted for the second feature giving Rodney Boyd the pole, Thomas Marks lined up to his outside. Mark Wertz, who was supposed to roll off sixth, elected to start from the rear. Conner Hall was able to get his back up car to the track and unloaded to also start in the rear. Shawn Balluzzo, who was making his return to Late Model racing after more than a decade, was unable to answer the bell after transmission issues plagued him in the first race.

At the drop of the green flag Chesapeake native, Brenden Queen was quick to the throttle and dove under Boyd into turn one to take the lead. Justin Carroll would follow him into the second position with the Edwards brothers hot on their tails. There was plenty of racing to watch from the front of the field – Queen & Carroll working to hold off Greg Edwards, Mark Wertz rocketing through the field, as well as Cameron Bowen flexing his muscles after overheating issues in race one.

The first of two lead changes took place on lap 28 when Greg Edwards finally got around Queen after battling door-to-door for a handful of laps. Mark Wertz made the pass soon after on Queen, who started to fall backwards after his car tightened up.

It was just past the halfway point of the race when Wertz got around Greg Edwards for the lead and fully mashed the “Check Out Button” and eventually opening up more than a straightaway lead. Behind that, however, saw some very exciting and intense racing between Brenden Queen, Justin Carroll, Cameron Bowan, and Danny Edwards Jr trading more than their fair share of “paint.”

Several cars fell off the pace later in the race. Pole sitter Conner Hall was one of them after deciding to park the backup car after contact with another racer and not wanting to damage the car, Nick Smith also pulled off early with issues. The first and only caution in the second race came with just under five laps to go after a scary moment in turn two. Thomas Marks lost a right front tire right in front of Greg Edwards, Justin Carroll, and Cameron Bowen. Luckily everyone stayed off of each other, Marks stayed off the wall and was able to limp his machine back down pit road.

After the field was bunched back up, drivers either took the cone or didn’t, the race was resumed with two Langley Speedway vets Mark Wertz and Greg Edwards on the front row. Edwards, making one last attempt at the lead, pinched Wertz down to the apron going into the corner but did not have enough to get the double nickel down and Wertz powered back to the lead out of two and the eventual race win. Justin Carroll took full advantage of the restart falling into the second position, however would lose the spot to Greg before the end of the race. Danny Edwards Jr., and Brenden Queen would complete the top five finishers.

The victory marked win number 100 for the Chesapeake native who announced earlier this year that 2018 will be his last year of full-time racing.

“We’ve been testing a lot, lots of shop time, the guys been busting their butts,” Wertz said in victory lane. “We learned a little bit, I knew we had a pretty good car in the first race, we were just one adjustment away. I knew those last three laps were gonna be rough, I was not going to be denied, we were either going to wreck em or win. This is number one hundred for me and I’ve spent thirty years trying to get em.”

 In other divisions, Danny Millard was able to get around Aaron Leach in the closing laps of the Hampton Roads Kart Club Wing Champ Kart race to take the win. Sean Calway was deemed the winner of the very physical Super Street feature after Dale Paro, who was first to take the checkered flag, was disqualified due to a carburetor issue. Adam Florian picked up another victory in the Pro Six series to remain undefeated and Mike Joyner grabbed another win in the Bojangle’s Enduro nightcap.

Racing will return to Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway next weekend for a Fathers Day special – twin Late Model features along with Modifieds, Grand Stocks, Super Trucks, Legends, Bando’s, and Enduro’s.

Nick Smith and Bobby McCarty Tied Going Into Final Segment of the 2017 Virginia Triple Crown Series

A lot will be on the line this weekend when over eighty Late Model Stock cars make the return trip to Ridgeway, Virginia for the largest race of the season for these weekend worries. Take away the $25,000 check to the winner, take away the chance to bring home a famous grandfather clock to your shop, throw out the fact that this will be the first event under the permanent LED lights. Well okay, don’t really throw that out because it is almost everything that anyone is talking about. With all of that going on this weekend we do not want to forget that one driver will leave The Paperclip as the 2017 Virginia Triple Crown Champion and net no less than $10,000.

For those who may not know, the Virginia Triple Crown is a three-race, three track series, where the winner is the one driver who competes in all three races and accumulates the highest average finish. The series is kicked off at South Boston Speedway with their annual running of the Thunder Road Harley Davidson 200, the speedways riches race of the year. Followed very closely by The Hampton Heat 200 hosted by Langley Speedway, all to come to a head in the fall at Martinsville Speedway.

Two drivers will unload Friday afternoon deadlocked at the top of the leaderboard so to speak with an average finish of 3.5. Give the nod to Bobby McCarty, the most recent winner of the Hampton Heat, as he has the better finishing position between him and Hampton’s own, Nick Smith. McCarty, who failed to make the show in 2013 & 2015, looks to improve on his 24th place finish from last year after replacing teammate Timothy Peters, as well as notch another accomplishment off his belt as well as become the 2017 Virginia Triple Crown champ. McCarty felt good this past week at the Thursday night test expressing his plan his to save the car and his breaks and go all out at the end.

Nick Smith took the more consistent approach to earn his position tied at the top of the standings. Not discrediting McCarty’s runs in both races but a third-place finish at South Boston and a fourth-place finish at his home track for the Hampton Heat should go to show that Nick Smith is a force to be reckoned with in these long distance races. Smith is coming off of one of the most dominating seasons in his Late Model career picking up twelve wins and the track championship at the newly opened Dominion Speedway in 2016. Smith elected to return to his home track this season running the new Chevy Spec motor where he collected two wins on the season. Bad luck and bad timing appeared to be what kept him out of the points battle. Smith will make the trek this weekend sans the Chevy Spec motor using the same Chevy built motor he had success with last season.

Brenden Queen, another driver who calls Langley Speedway home, is not out of the hunt with his eighth and second place finishes. Queen comes into the weekend sitting in third place with an average finish of fifth place. Fourteen drivers will be eligible this weekend for the extra bonus money should they make the trip out. With the craziness that is Martinsville, anything can happen at the end of 200 laps. All fourteen drivers and their average finishes are listed here.

 

Front gates will open to fans at 4:00 PM Friday afternoon for practice that will run until 7:00 PM. Pole Qualifying will start approx. 8:00 PM. Registration and the ticket office will open Saturday morning at 11:00 AM with the garage opening at noon. General Admission gates will open at 2:00 PM with an hour-long autograph session scheduled from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. The 25-lap qualifying races will roll off at 4:00 PM with the 200-lap feature race starting approx. 8:00 PM.

Phillip Morris Takes Home the Big Check in the W.O. Grubb 150

Thornburg, VA – The story at Dominion Raceway Thursday was all about points. Lee Pulliam made his debut at the track hunting for some late season national points as he holds a one point lead over second place this season, he is trying to get his fourth national championship. The track championship is also very close with Tyler Hughes and Doug Barnes battling hard all season long.

The 2016 national champion qualified on the pole running a 15.247 second lap to beat out Morris by .012. Pulliam would start fifth and Hughes out ran Barnes by 6 spots and started on the outside of row three. But they do things a little different at Dominion Raceway, and Bowling pulled a six out of the redraw bag which put Hughes up front for the green flag.

Hughes enjoyed the lead with no pressure from behind for the opening thirty laps until Morris was able to navigate through the cars between them like it was nothing. As they first started catching lapped traffic Morris kept cutting into the lead but the caution would erase it fully with Colin Garrett spinning out off of turn two.

The green flag flew with an even hundred alps remaining in the race and Hughes cleared Morris, he tried the high line with the cone choice, fairly easily. Fourteen laps into the run and Morris had shaken Sellers off from his rear and was no focused 100% on Hughes. Morris was able to nose in to the inside and they raced door to door for a lap until Hughes pulled back ahead and the caution came out for the second time, this time for 2016 track champion Nick Smith getting a tap to his rear and spinning out. Under this caution Lee’s crew tried to fix his ailing car several times and he eventually got caught two laps down.

The front row stayed the same for this restart with Hughes low and Morris high. They didn’t waste much time as they went three wide along with Sellers for the lead, Morris ended up winning out on the risky move on lap 80. Hughes put up a fight for the next couple of laps, peaking inside of Morris a few times but couldn’t get past the four time national champ. Sellers made some contact with Hughes in his pursuit for second but it got them both out of line and Bowling took over the spot. Not long after that the biggest wreck of the night put a lot of damage on several cars with Jeff Oakley, Michael Hardin, Barnes, and Hughes all taking hits.

Morris liked the high line and chose it again, but as the leader this time. He cleared Bowling on the restart and Sergio Pena worked his way by Bowling for second and Brenden “Butterbean” Queen also worked up to fourth place getting by Sellers. Behind them Barnes and Hughes ended up battling each other for seventh position and with 35 laps to go even made it three wide while passing a slower car, these two left nothing on the track. Nine laps later they are still side by side but the caution came out for Chris Johnson’s car losing a motor. A rough ending for Johnson who had come from 23rd to 6th at this point.

The next green flag run was short lived as Puryear got caught up again and this time it ripped off most of his body work and the red flag had to come out to get everything up.

For the next restart Morris again went high and Pena and Queen chose low. Morris showed how strong his car was on this restart setting his fastest time of the race as second through fifth all ran side by side and completely checked on them. Barnes and Pena traded second position for a few laps while they were side by side but Barnes would eventually fall back to fifth with Hughes and Queen getting by him.

Morris took the checkers with no pressure from behind him to win his second big trophy of the year, with his first being the South Boston leg of the triple crown.

After the race Morris had nothing but praise for the racing at Dominion, “I want to race here all the time, I keep telling the guys. They think its close and I’m only an hour away but every where we go is three hours but I just love this place. I just wanna keep coming here, you can really charge the corners here and it makes for some really great racing.” He also mentioned why the racing is so good, “That guy in the 8 car [Tyler Hughes] we had a good battle out there, he was running pretty good. It’s kind of weird, it’s hard to get away from anybody because you got some drafting going on too so you get a little bit of everything. I’ve run some of the Xfinity series, truck series, and its a little bit of everything so any driver that is looking to go up they want to come here because you can learn a lot more at this race track.” The team plans on using this momentum going forward to finish out the year strong and use the lessons learned this year for a possible run next season at the national title.

We also caught up with a very happy Sergio Pena, “We did a lot better than expected, coming into this race we weren’t sure if we were gonna run it or not it was kinda last minute. We came to practice with a set of tires that had a 100 laps on them so to come home second surpassed all of our expectations. Qualified kind of bad to be honest, qualified 16th and fortunately had Sam on the spotters tower for me kind of guided me through the crazy traffic that was out there. Had a couple lucky breaks with cautions that fell at the right time and I’ll tell you what before we knew it half way through the race we were right up there with Peyton Sellers, Phillip Morris, and Matt Bowling…some of the best names in the country, the best names in the country, and to come home second behind Morris I’ll take that as a win its just unreal. Just want to thank you to Sam Beatie and Joe, these guys work on this car very hard and it wouldn’t be possible without them so I just want to say thank you to those guys.”

Matt Bowling Sits on the Pole in Stacked Field for W.O. Grubb 150

Thornburg, VA – 2016 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion Matt Bowling set fastest time in the late model qualifying session with a 15.247 second lap to beat out Phillip Morris who has two wins at the track so far this year. National points leader Lee Pulliam qualified fifth behind Nick Smith and Eddie Johnson.

The late models will be running 150 laps with no break or competition caution tonight.

We will also be covering the Dominion Stocks tonight for their 35-lap race right before the late models. Bobby Curtis is on the pole in that division after running an 18.014 in their session. The points leader, Richard Powers, qualified fifth.
