Edwards Motorsports To Be Crowned Champion at Langley Speedway; Danny Edwards On Pace for Sixth Track Title

Late Model Stock Car racing makes its return to Hampton, Virginia’s Larry King Laws Langley Speedway. Wow. That is something very strange to type the first week in October. However, it has been a full month since Late Models have raced at the .395-mile oval – August 25th to be exact – with Greg Edwards finding his way back to victory lane for the first time in 2018 sweeping both 75-lap features. With just two more races on the books and an eleven-point lead, Danny Edwards Jr. will look to put a bookend on a spectacular season.

Danny enters Pomoco Nissan Championship Night with an eleven-point (325) point advantage over brother and teammate Greg Edwards (314). However, as we have seen in the past, anything can happen once the green flag is displayed and these cars come to life later this evening. As we have seen in the past with twin races all it takes is one hiccup in the first race to send your night spiraling down the toilet – for the lack of better terms.

Danny Edwards is all too familiar with this when he lost the championship back in 2015 when a flat tire plagued him late in the final race of the season. Greg was able to take the win and tie the points. Greg would then go on to “steal” the title from his brother thanks to his win and because of that win, the tiebreaker. With each position earning just one point Danny would only need to earn two fifth-place finishes regardless if Greg is able to sweep both races.

The Edwards Brothers will not be the only drivers to keep your eye on this evening. Even though Chesapeake native Mark Wertz enters the evening twenty-two points off the division lead, Wertz is looking to put his full-time driving career to an end with at least one more win at his home track. Two other drivers in the top five, Connor Hall and Brenden Queen, have been strong all season long but have yet to find their way into Dale Lemonds Victory Lane, look for both of these young drivers to fight for the win before the 2018 season comes to an end.

Five more divisions will crown champions later this evening when the checkered flag waves. Layton Harrison will look to hold off Wyatt Philyaw in the Cycle City Corp Bandolero series. Harrison enters tonight’s race with an eight-point lead. Tommy Jackson Jr., who has been on fire as of late, enters the weekend with a twelve point lead over last years champion, Spencer Saunders. Unless cars come out of the woodwork, Jackson all but needs to start the feature to secure the tile. Jacob Carr will look to hang onto his eight-point advantage over Dustin Mullins in the Harris Truck Shop Super trucks series. Paul Lubno, in arguably the most lopsided championship battle, does not even need to show up for tonight’s 40-lap Pepsi Grand Stock finale to lock up his series title. Last but certainly not least, Ronald Klein looks to hang onto his more than ten point advantage to win the Bojangle’s Enduro title.

Three Cars From Top Ten Times Were Disallowed After Failing Post Qualifying Inspection; Will Start from the Rear of Their Respective Heat Races

Ridgeway, VA – Post qualifying tech has officially wrapped up here at Martinsville Speedway. Once again the “Room of Doom” has shaken things up on the eve of arguably the best race of the year in the Late Model Stock Car community.

Bobby McCarty (22), Todd Gilliland (45), and Matt Bowling (83) were all found to have issues with the rear ends of their machines. NASCAR officials have stated that all three teams will have the opportunity to fix the issues in the morning, roll back through tech and should they fix all the issues, they have the chance to start their respective heat races from the rear. The speedway also clarified that the no. 70 of Dylan Ward and no. 44 Kyle Dudley both completed engine swaps and will start behind the three cars mentioned above.

Fan gates open at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the driver autograph session scheduled for 1-2:30 p.m. on the front stretch. Three 25-lap qualifying races, followed by the 25 lap LCQ to set the field will start at 3 p.m. The 200-lap feature race will begin at 8:00 p.m.Motor Racing Network’s live coverage of the race and the free online stream of the race, on FansChoice.tv, will begin at 7:30.

Philip Morris Wins Historic Fifth NASCAR National Title

You’d think Philip Morris would be used to this by now.

After all, the 53-year-old from Ruckersville, Virginia, has carved out a résumé nearly unmatched in NASCAR short-track racing history. And yet, when it was made official Wednesday afternoon with a congratulatory phone call from NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell, a reflective Morris was still awed by the moment.

“It means that much,” Morris said. “It’s as if we were winning our first national championship.”

It isn’t Morris’ first. It’s his fifth NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I national championship. And that puts him in rare company, matching NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee, the late Larry Phillips, for the most national weekly series championships in NASCAR history. Morris won his titles in 2006, 2008-09 and 2011 before taking a semi-retirement hiatus. He returned in 2016 and finished sixth in the points last year.

“I just have a much bigger appreciation for what was accomplished,” said Morris after his time away from chasing the national crown. “Plus, I get to be mentioned in the same sentence as Larry Philips. That’s always a good thing.

“I don’t think I deserve it, but I think it’s amazing. That guy is a legend. I’m just glad to be in his company.”

Morris accomplished the feat this year with remarkable dominance and consistency. He rolled off nine wins in his first 12 starts and led the national championship points standings wire-to-wire. He finished with 23 wins, 28 top fives and 31 top 10s in 35 Late Model Stock Car starts at Virginia’s South Boston Speedway and Dominion Raceway, North Carolina’s Hickory Motor Speedway and Southern National Raceway Park, and South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach Speedway.

Morris also claimed his sixth Virginia championship.

Morris finished with 670 points, easily outdistancing fellow short-track stalwarts Steve Carlson (623) and Keith Rocco (621).

Carlson, the 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion, had nine wins, 15 top fives and 19 top 10s in 22 starts racing primarily at Wisconsin’s LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. He also raced at Wisconsin’s Madison International Speedway.

Like Morris, Carlson and Rocco have made their name as one of the best short-track racers in NASCAR history.

Carlson won his sixth Wisconsin championship and holds a four-point lead with one race remaining in his quest for a seventh Late Model title at LaCrosse. In addition, the 61-year-old driver from West Salem, Wisconsin, has five NASCAR championships in the former Midwest Series to go with four from its predecessor, the ARTGO Midwest Seres, and was the 2009 ARCA Midwest Tour champion.

Rocco tallied 10 wins, 17 top fives and 21 top 10s in 27 starts in the SK Modified Division at Connecticut’s Stafford Motor Speedway and the Sunoco Modified Division at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.

The 33-year-old Wallingford, Connecticut, driver claimed his 10th Connecticut championship. The 2010 national champion holds a 48-point lead heading into Thompson’s 56th annual Sunoco World Series in October as he looks to claim his 16th career NASCAR Division I track title. It would give him sole possession of second place all-time and put him one behind the record set by Nebraska’s Joe Kosiski (17 titles from 1985-2005).

It is also the 11th time in the last 12 seasons that Rocco has finished in the top five in the national standings, and marks the eighth time since 2009 that he’s finished in the top three.

NASCAR uses a driver’s best 18 finishes from any sanctioned track within the state to determine the State Champion and the best 18 finishes from any sanctioned track in North America to determine the National Champion.

The crowning of U.S. state and Canadian province champions is a tradition that dates back to the earliest days of NASCAR and carried on until the advent of the weekly series in 1982; It was resumed in 2007. Past champions include Ned Jarrett, Glen Wood, Ralph Earnhardt, Wendell Scott and Richie Evans.

The fact that it was Carlson and Rocco chasing him weighed on Morris’ mind, even has he held a sizable summer lead.

“We worked so hard for every point,” Morris said. “That’s just the veteran side of me, where I’ve been in tight battles where we had a lead before and saw it close up at the end. Maybe we worked harder because of what I learned in the past.”

Morris put together a stretch run from 2006-11 when he won 74 of 159 races (46.5%) and his four titles. But following the final one, he stepped away from full-time competition to focus on his business, Trailer Town USA in Virginia. Over the next four year, he ran just 25 races. He came back and finished 32nd in the nation in 2016 before moving up to sixth last year.

This season, he focused on reclaiming his former glory.

It hasn’t been an easy comeback.

“I didn’t realize the price I’d have to pay, not just on the national level, but just to be competitive at our local track,” Morris said. “It as so much more work to get back to being competitive physically and mentally and the equipment. Keeping up with the tires and track surfaces and engines — it was like I was starting over.

“I’m not going to say I took it for granted. But I didn’t realize how important it was for me to continue.”

Morris didn’t win his hometown track title. That went to Peyton Sellers, who claimed won his fourth track title at South Boston. The 2005 national championship finished fourth in the national standings with three wins, 18 top fives and 18 top 10s in 21 starts at South Boston and Langley. Nick Panitzke, who is chasing Carlson for the title at LaCrosse, finished fifth with five wins, 14 top fives and 18 top 10s in 20 starts at LaCrosse and Madison.

Ronnie Williams finished sixth in the national standings and has already clinched the SK Modified title at Stafford.

A quartet of Modified drivers from North Carlina’s Bowman Gray Stadium rounded out the top 10: Tim Brown, Burt Myers, Jonathan Brown and Jason Myers. While Burt Myers won his ninth track title at the historic Winston-Salem oval, Brown claimed the North Carolina title by five points.

Morris, Carlson and Rocco will be joined by the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series U.S. state and Canadian province champions, track champions and other special award winners on Friday, Dec. 7, as part of NASCAR Awards Charlotte.

The 10th Annual Hampton Heat is Finally Upon Us — Who to Watch Tonight

After almost a full extra month of waiting due to Mother Nature, it is time for some of the best Late Model Stock Car drivers to get after it later this evening all battling for the prestigious trophy, points towards the Virginia Triple crown, oh and how did we almost forget… $10,000!

Twenty-five cars made the trip out for the annual Friday test session giving those of us who followed on Race Monitor all day long in our offices an idea of what to expect later this evening. A complete list of practice times can be found a little further down this column. We will say that we fully expect thirty or more cars for the actual event. Make sure you have plans to make it out later this afternoon as it will not be broadcasted on Fanschoice! Gates will open to the public at 12:15 PM, “Happy Hour” for Late Models roll off approx. 12:30 PM. Green flag is expected to to drop at 7:00 PM EDT.

So, this might be your first time out to the speedway this year and you are wondering who to watch out for, right? Well folks we have you covered in that department. Don’t wanna do research? That’s cool. Let’s take a look at the top five drivers we feel are going to be a threat, in no particular order of course.

Philip Morris

Obvious, right? We know but we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t put Morris on the who to watch list. Morris certainly has made a name for himself and drawn a lot of attention to the No. 01 Trailer Town USA Chevrolet this year has he makes a solid bid for another national title. Morris has found victory lane at just about every track he’s been to this year. Even though Morris “struggled” in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown earlier this year – a similar 200 lap endurance type race – he had found victory lane seven times this year at Larry King Law Langley Speedway, often times starting in the rear of the field for the second race. Oh and not to mention Morris was fastest at the conclusion of practice Friday afternoon with a 15.816.

Danny Edwards Jr.

Take away the fact Edwards has multiple track championships, more than a decade of experience, and have completed more laps at Langley Speedway to make multiple cross country road trips across this great nation, Danny Edwards Jr. has been firing on all cylinders this year. With two wins under his belt, Edwards enters the weekend as the current points leader of the Taylor Waste Services Late Model — he leave the same way no matter what as the Hampton Heat will not count towards track points — but we think it’s more important to point out that Edwards might be the only track regular to have an answer to the pure speed of Morris. If you remember back to April, Edwards earned the pole in the DHSTS and looked to be a force until a wreck took him out. A win tonight could not come at a more perfect time as it would also be his first Hampton Heat victory but it would come on the two year anniversary of the loss of former crew chief John McMasters.

C.E. Falk

CE Falk? He doesn’t even race at Langley on a regular basis, how is he going to be a factor? Well, it’s very simply put. He’s CE Falk and if you don’t respect his ability any time he pulls into Langley Speedway then that’s your first mistake. The car number will be different on race day — he will be in a 02 car — but will still be a factor towards the front. Falk clocked in with just the eighth fastest time Friday afternoon but there was no way to confirm the age of his tires. Falk was also a major factor in the DHSTS and there is no doubt he will be a key player later tonight.

Connor Hall

Yup, we went there! And it’s about time for this young driver to go there again! As you can see pictures above, Hall has already found victory lane once towards the end of last year at his home track and he has certainly carried that speed over into 2018. Constantly running qualifying and running up front this season and coming off of a pole and win at East Carolina Motor Speedway the week prior, Connor Hall will certainly have the momentum going for him. Our biggest concern with Hall will be his patients. 2018 has been filled with 50-75 lap sprint races. He will have to physically and mentally keep the car under him, fenders straight, and tires up for 200 laps. If he can do all three of those things he will certainly have the speed to be a contender.

Bobby McCarty

Want to talk about who’s on fire this year, well see the driver pictured above. Bobby McCarty enters the 10th Annual Hampton Heat 200 not only as the defending champion but he is also the current points leader for the CARS Tour Late Model Series with one pole and four wins in nine starts. Not to mention McCarty posted the third quickest time in Friday’s test session. Traveling with the CARS Tour this year has given McCarty the chance to learn different track surfaces and really improve his skill. Look for him to hover around the top quarter of the field when it’s time to go green.

Honorable Mentions:

Greg Edwards: He has never won the prestigious event but is always a threat to find victory lane when he straps in at Langley Speedway. With a little luck he may come out on top.

Nick Smith: He didn’t earn the nickname “Quick Nick” for no reason. Smith is always fast around Langley and even though he is running a limited schedule this year, has already collected a win. However, could the limited race schedule this year hurt the inaugural Hampton Heat winner?

Peyton Seller: Crazy, right? How in the world does Peyton Sellers only make an honorable mention? We will just have to chalk it up to gut feeling and look to be proved wrong. Sellers is a contender everywhere he goes and he has without a doubt done his homework and is a previous winner. As the winner of the opening round of the VA Triple Crown at South Boston, will Sellers be aggressive and go for the win or play things safe to set himself up for an easier outing at Martinsville next month? Either way, Sellers could easily dominate this race tonight, only time will tell.

Tyler Dippel Sweeps the Visit Hampton VA 150 Weekend at Langley Speedway

Hampton, VA – Tyler Dippel was fastest in both afternoon practices and that transferred over to qualifying. Dippel’s 15.510-second lap (91.915 MPH) was good enough to win himself the pole and set a new track record. Keeping that momentum going through the night Dippel played the strategy game just right and found himself in victory lane at the end of the night.

It was a night of long runs, tire conservation, and different strategies at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway. It did not take long for Dippel to start working his way towards the back of the field as he gave up the lead to Anthony Alfredo on lap four. He and DGR teammate Tyler Ankrum shared the same strategy as they both fell quickly out of the top ten as they worked on saving their tires. Even though the race had a planned break at the halfway point there were no tires given to the teams to take on.

Anthony Alfredo would lead a handful of laps before handing that over to the No. 55 of Marcos Gomes who set a blistering pace in the caution free first half. Behind them, however, witnessed some close nose to tail racing as positions seven through fourteen all worked to maintain their spots on the track and their tires under the car.

Local drivers Connor Hall and Justin Carroll both stood out early on in the 150-lap feature at their home track; both drivers at one point running competitively in the top five. It appeared that just before the halfway point in the race that Carroll had found a little something on the outside line that helped him improve his position throughout the run.

The proverbial cream rose to the top so to speak in the second half only about three cars came down pit road for adjustments. Both Dippell and Ankrum turned up the heat for the second half of the race and tore through the field. Anthony Alfredo was able to take the lead and hold it for most of the second half while Ankrum led the DGR charge through the field. With the help of a couple late race cautions and a few lap cars, Ankrum was able to collapse Alfredo’s lead and take it from him on lap 137. He would miss his mark going back into turn one, wash up the track, and not only lose the lead back to Alfredo but fall to third behind Dipple and ultimately goes for a spin in turn two to bring out the nights final caution.

On the final restart, Alfredo spun his tires just a little bit and it was all Dipple need to take the lead. Behind him, it was a mad dash for second and third. Dillon Bassett trying to hold off Ankrum and Quinlan but it was ultimately not enough and Ankrum secured the third spot using the second groove on the brand new asphalt. With just a couple laps left Ankrum gave Alfredo a little shot through turn three and four but just did not have enough track left to make the pass and would have to settle for third.

The race win was all Dipple needed to close out and sweep the Visit Hampton VA 150 weekend at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway after finishing on top of the board in both practices and winning the pole. In victory lane, he thanked his crew for giving him the car to beat this weekend.

“This thing was on rails the whole weekend,” Dipple said in Dale Lemonds Victory Lane. “I cannot thank these guys enough. They are all All-Stars on this team. Man, this has been so long overdue. This win means so much. It feels so good to be back in victory lane.”

Alfredo, who earned his season-best finish on Saturday in Hampton, VA, felt he had the car to beat but ran into some bad luck with some of the slower cars towards the end of the race that clearly played a factor into his finishing position.

Tyler Ankrum, who entered the weekend’s event third in points behind Todd Gilliland and Harrison Burton – who were both not entered as you can see – should leave Langley Speedway as the points leader as results are made official.

 

Racing will return to the K&N Pro Series East Tour on Saturday, May 12th, 2018 for the Who’s Your Driver Twin 100’s.

Racing action will return to Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway on Saturday, May 5th with twin Late Model features, Grand Stocks, Super Trucks, Legends, Bando’s and Enduros.

Virginia Native Colin Garrett Looks Forward to K&N East Debut at Langley Speedway

Danville, VA – On Saturday, April 28, Colin Garrett will make his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut in the Visit Hampton VA 150 at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va. He will be driving the Hunt-Sellers Racing (HSR) No. 18 Propel GPS Toyota Camry.

“Saturday night is going to be a lot of fun,” said the rookie driver. “With it being my first NASCAR K&N Pro Series race, I have a lot to learn but am excited about this step in my career.”

In preparation for his debut, Garrett entered two late model stock car (LMSC) races at Langley Speedway with Sellers Racing in the No. 24 Propel GPS Toyota Camry. He competed in the Pomoco Auto Group Opening Night on March 31 as well as the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown on April 19.

“I have learned a lot over the last few weeks racing in the late model stock car at Langley Speedway,” said Garrett. “We didn’t get the results that we were hoping for, but I believe the experience was really good. We went there to learn and prepare for my K&N debut. My team and I learned a lot, so I’m confident that we will be competitive on Saturday night.”

Garrett has been taken under the wing of long-time LMSC racer and stock car mechanic Frank Deiny, Jr. Starting in the 2017 season, Deiny became Garrett’s driver coach and spotter. In addition to those roles, he is also Garrett’s crew chief in the LMSC division. In 2017, Garrett and Deiny worked together to win the Limited Sportsman championship at South Boston Speedway.

“Colin has done a great job in 2018,” said Deiny, Jr. “Langley Speedway is a tough track to get your feet wet in a K&N car, but he will be up for the challenge.”

In addition to Garrett joining HSR for three races this season, HSR welcomes its new crew chief, Clinton Cram for the 2018 season. Cram is a veteran crew chief in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Team owner Sam Hunt is thankful and excited to have Cram join the HSR family.

“Clinton has been in the shop every moment he can,” said Hunt. “We have a great working relationship already. We’re looking forward to our first race with him as our crew chief. He is a huge addition and asset to our team, and we’re excited about the future with him.”

The Visit Hampton 150 at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway will begin at 7 p.m. EST. The race will be tape-delayed on NBC Sports Network on May 3 at 11 p.m. EST.

Solid Field Of Cars Expected For Season-Opening Race At South Boston Speedway Saturday Night

South Boston, VA  – The lights will go on at South Boston Speedway Saturday night for the first time this season with a strong field of Late Model cars expected.

The Autos By Nelson presents the ValleyStar Credit Union Twin 100s will roll off at 7 p.m. Saturday with a strong field of cars anticipated to take the green flag.

Drivers expected for the Late Model field include defending track champion and former NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Peyton Sellers, former track champion and four-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Philip Morris, Danny Willis Jr., Brandon Pierce, Bobby McCarty, Mike Jones, Austin Thaxton, Bruce Anderson, Eric Winslow, Quincy Adkins, Charles Barnes, Thomas Scott, Blake Stallings, Mark Kesee Jr. and Jason Barnes, among others. Entries are not finalized until teams sign in Saturday afternoon.

Pierce is coming off one of his best runs ever, finishing second in the CARS Tour event at Orange County Speedway last Saturday night after winning the pole with a new track record in his Thunder Road Harley Davidson Camry. The young driver believes his team is loaded with positive energy headed to South Boston this week.

“We’re absolutely bringing a lot of momentum into the race and really look forward to getting to the track,” said Pierce, who finished fifth in South Boston Speedway’s championship points last year. “It’s really a confidence booster when you run so well like we did over the weekend and then you know your next race is at a track that you are familiar with and have laps on. We’re looking forward to it.”

Pierce’s Nelson Motorsports teammate McCarty finished one spot behind him over the weekend in third, and also believes he brings momentum into Saturday’s South Boston race. He finished second in the South Boston points race last year.

“I feel we have been strong all year long and any time we go to South Boston Speedway, there’s always more excitement and motivation because we consider it our home track,” said McCarty, who drives a Toyota Camry sponsored by autosbynelson.com.

Thaxton, who made his CARS Tour Late Model debut last week, is just as excited as Pierce and McCarty about coming back home to South Boston this week, but he may have a longer week than them.

“I’m ready to get back over there to South Boston,” said Thaxton, who won on his home track last year. “It’s going to be a long week, though. I had a run in with the wall last week.”

The Martinsville Speedway offer will remain in place for the Autos By Nelson presents ValleyStar Credit Union Twin 100s. Anyone presenting a ticket stub from either the Alpha Energy Solutions 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race or the STP 500 NASCAR Monster Energy Series race earlier this spring at Martinsville Speedway will be admitted free.

Saturday’s season-opener will feature twin 100-lap Late Model Stock races, twin 25-lap Limited Sportsman Division races, a 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock race, a 15-lap Budweiser Hornets race and a 30-lap Mod 4 Division race.

Gates open at 5:30, qualifying is at 6 at the first race rolls off at 7 Saturday night. Tickets are just $10 for adults, and new for 2018, children 12-and-under will be admitted free with a paying adult.
