David Latour Holds Off Eric Winslow for Limited Win

South Boston, VA – Fifteen limited late models took to South Boston Speedway to grab the checkers in the first race of the season.

Colin Garrett continued the trend of setting track records running a 15.140 second lap in qualifying, beat the previous limited record of 15.478 and even beating the old late model record of 15.314.

Trey Crews lined up to his outside and would lead the first lap before falling back to third with Ross “Boo Boo” Dalton getting by him on the inside with a driving style you’d see at dirt tracks all over the country. By lap 12 Garrett had a second and a half lead over Dalton. Three laps later Mike Jones gets some help from Daniel Moss and busts the radiator out of his car.

With the cone out Amber Balcaen decides to take the high line and challenge and beats him on the restart. Moss gets invovled in another incient and the yellow flies again with Garrett up front, Eric Winslow in second, and Balcaen in third. Coming to the green again they go three wide out of turn two and Winslow takes the lead and Balcaen gets some tire rub going from a collapsed fender. Dylan Saul was all over the rear of Balcaen until the caution flew again for Brandon Jones coming to a stop on the track.

Garrett decides to try the outside on Winslow and it pays off as Eric has trouble on the restart with a bad shift. Saul is able to get by Balcaen with a bump and run and Trey Crews follows. Shortly after that Balcaen and Dalton get into a wreck with Amber’s race ending. The next restart Garrett and Winslow come together with some big damage to the 24 of Colin.

Another lap, another caution. This time for debris on the track. Dylan Saul and Crews make up the front row and Trey leads them out of turn two. With some crazy three wide driving Latour and Winslow end up out front and Latour locks up the win in a crash filled fifty lapper.

It looks like there is gonna be a lot of good, regular competition in this series for the year and should be very interesting to watch.

Clay Jones Finds Victory Lane In Limited Late Model Feature

LLM Winner_Clay Jones

Kenly, NC – You would think the theme was “Yellow” for Day 2 of the 2015 Thanksgiving All-Star Classic at Southern National Motorsport Park. No, not because a majority of the cars were yellow, or the track did some kind of yellow out commonly found at football games. It was more so due to the fact the yellow flag wave four to five times as much as the green and checkered flag – combined. Now that’s no real fault of the track, its just the nature of the game when you put big money, contingency awards, and bounty’s out in multiple divisions. Money draws cars and cars draw cautions. Honestly though, how can you be mad at thirty plus Legends and over twenty UCARS?

Not only the nightcap but also the headline of night number two, the Limited Late Model division. True Limited’s mind you, not the hybrid division created and run this past season to help cut cost and drive car counts. A total of 18 cars showed up for this weekend’s big event while only 16 cars finished the race. Clay Jones, qualifying on the outside pole, bested only by Ronald Renfro, wasted no time early grabbing the lead and running away with things. Louis White, who has always been a very strong car took over second just as fast and he too almost never let go.

Thankfully the divisions only caution of the night came early from a solo spin down low in turn. To this moment I still have not been able to confirm who exactly it was – I know bad media person! Thought we were going to run into some trouble on the ensuing restart as Renfrow – who elected to use the cone and restart in the second position – got the restart of his life. I was all but ready to see the caution lights come back over the speedway. Guess that’s why I stay downstairs in the media booth and let Mr. Ellis handle the heavy stuff upstairs. We stayed green for the rest of the race and watched some pretty intense battles for position through the field.

Jones, who had honestly been the class of the field all night, said in victory lane after the race that he was glad there were no more cautions. “We had a great car and took off a little snug and got going and I kind of burnt the right rear up trying to stay in front. I was just hanging on right there at the end,” said Jones. “They kept telling me Joe was coming but I was just doing all I could to stay there. Thank God there wasn’t a caution. I can’t thank these guys enough. They put a rocket under me again. They’re making me look good. I can’t thank them enough.” It looked like Louis White was a shoe in for the runner up position but a late race slip up out of two made him chase his machine up the hill and allowing Joe Heigl to get by.

LUCAMA, NC – Bradley McCaskill’s victory in Saturday’s Halloween Spooktacular at Southern National Motorsports Park was only justice seeing as the Archer Lodge, North Carolina driver led all but one lap in the 70 lap affair.

McCaskill entered the race fresh off a pair of second place finished, both to three-time and now reigning NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) national champion Lee Pulliam. In fact, in 2015, McCaskill has finished no worse than second at Southern National. That trend continued when he set the fast lap in qualifying and dominated en route to his second Southern National victory in 2015.

“I think we had probably the stiffest competition here other than Lee [Pulliam],” McCaskill said. “I mean, Clay Jones and Mack Little are just awesome drivers. There again, just hard work. Yesterday, worked here all day as long as we could and dialed this car in.”

McCaskill’s victory is the latest in what has arguably been the best season in his young career. Along with his wins at Southern National this season, McCaskill also scored a victory in the elite Championship Auto Racing Series (CARS) Late Model Stock Tour back in August in Concord, North Carolina.

“Just surrounded by a great group of people,” McCaskill remarked. “Trying to thank God every race if I can remember. It’s very humbling for us just to run this good and run a different car. Surrounded by great people who give me great opportunities.”

Clay Jones finished second in his previous two Southern National Motorsports Park appearances and that is where he would again finish on Saturday after leading one lap early in the race.

“It wasn’t too bad,” Jones said. “We struggled all weekend. Struggled bad yesterday. Got a little better this morning then found some stuff after practice and picked up a ton in qualifying. I think we were good. We were flying through the corners. I could pick him up right through the center but we’d get on the straightaway and he’d be three carlengths by the end of the straightaway. I can’t thank my guys enough. We worked hard all week. All the fenders are on it so we’ll go to Hickory next weekend for the CARS race and do well there.”

LUCAMA, NC – Limited Late Model racing will be the highlight of the Halloween Spooktacular at Southern National Motorsports Park on Saturday afternoon with a strong field of over 20 cars chasing victory and the possibility of winning $2,700.

The Limited Late Model field consists of championship drivers, old and new, as well as racers who find themselves in contention for race wins. Limited Late Model racing isn’t the only thing on the card for Saturday. A strong field of U-CARs, Legends cars and Bandoleros are all set to converge on the 4/10-mile oval in Lucama, North Carolina and a 10 lap all-female Powder Puff Shootout will leave plenty of people with a lifetime of memories.

Clay Jones Sets Sights on Victory

Goldsboro, North Carolina’s Clay Jones has not been as active on the Limited Late Model scene this season as he has been in the past. The veteran racer has been focusing on Super Late Model racing, but, when he has raced in his blue and black no. 15 car, he’s every bit the threat he has always been. Jones has recorded victories this season at Wake County Speedway in Raleigh, North Carolina and at Carteret County Speedway in Swansboro, North Carolina. Now, in his first Southern National appearance of the year in a Late Model, he expects to bring home a win.

Moody Getting Back on Track

2014 Southern National Motorsports Park Limited Late Model racer Haley Moody has not been able to duplicate the success she had one year ago. Last year, she scored three wins. This year, the 20-year-old from Kinston North Carolina has only two top-five finishes. Despite having enjoyed tremendous success at Southern National Motorsports Park, Halloween Spooktacular will be Moody’s second Southern National appearance of 2015. Last year, she finished third in the Halloween Spooktacular. This year, she believes she is willing and able to win.

Wertz Hoping to Make a Mark

Two-time Langley Speedway track champion and popular veteran Mark Wertz is one of the more than 20 drivers who will be competing on Saturday. Wertz is making his first Southern National appearance since the 2013 Thanksgiving All-Star Classic and he comes in with momentum on his side after snapping a five year winless streak earlier this year out at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia.

LUCAMA, NC – A stout combination of championship drivers and championship hopefuls have pre-entered for the Limited Late Model portion of Saturday’s Halloween Spooktacular at Southern National Motorsports Park.

18 drivers have already entered the race. That list includes Wake County Speedway champion Alex Fleming, former Southern National Motorsports Park champions Clay Jones and Haley Moody, former Bowman Gray Stadium champion Mack Little and regional regulars such as Bradley McCaskill, Zachary Marks, Zach Henshaw, Rusty Daniels and Ronald Renfrow.

Alex Fleming and Clay Jones are both making their first Southern National starts of the season. Jones has been competing in the Championship Auto Racing Series (CARS) Super Late Model Tour and Fleming won the track championship at Wake County Speedway in Raleigh, North Carolina. Haley Moody is making her second Southern National start of the season and looking for her first 2015 win after scoring three wins in 2014.

Bradley McCaskill has one win and four second place finishes at Southern National in 2015 and is a favorite to win, but Rusty Daniels could be a threat to him. Daniels also has a Southern National win this season.
