Hall Outlasts Competition in Rain Postponed Solid Rock Carriers 150

PELETIER, NC – It took just shy of five hours to complete the rain-delayed Solid Rock Carriers 150 at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway on Sunday, but after two lengthy delays, Connor Hall hoisted the trophy and the $10,000 check in the attrition-filled race.

Hall, 22, from Hampton, Virginia, took the lead on the opening lap of the race, passing Chris Burns with a power move on the outside, and dominated for much of the race – only surrendering the lead for three laps shortly after the halfway break.  After the race, his second $10,000 victory in the past month and his third career Carteret County Speedway win, Hall was ecstatic about his triumph but also relieved the arduous race, which spanned for 4 hours and 57 minutes in length, had finally reached its conclusion.

“I’m just glad it’s over,” Hall said in victory lane.  “I would like to think the Hampton Heat was the longest race of my life, but I’ve never had one where we had to fix the track and do a rain delay in the same race.  As much as I wanted them to just call it and make it easy on me, I’m glad we stuck it out and I’m glad Carteret County stuck it out.  I’ll give them credit.  They got it done.  They did a good job.”

Hall won the Hampton Heat 200 at Langley Speedway in July – a grueling race which was held amid excessive heat.  Once again, in Sunday’s Solid Rock Carriers 150, Hall was able to hit his marks during the daytime and in primetime.

“I drove far from a perfect race,” Hall stated.  “My guy [Tim] Allensworth, I missed a shift on a restart and we had been sitting from that patch.  I guess I just got kind of out of the rhythm.  Luckily, we weren’t wrecked.  I’ve got to thank Tyler Horne for peddling it.  We did run a good race.  We stuck through it, and it was fun.  The breaks didn’t do anything to my car because Carteret realized we did need to reset air pressures.  I thank them for letting that happen.  The night definitely helped this car.  As soon as the sun went down and saw some colder weather coming, I knew it was going to be game on.”

Allensworth, who went on to finish second, appeared poised to mount a serious challenge to Hall on a lap 104 restart.  Allensworth was able to draw even with Hall’s dominant car and was in the preferred line, but his challenge was cut short when Chris Burns and Stacy Puryear tangled for the second time behind the leaders on the race’s 106th lap.

A couple of laps, and over an hour, prior to the lap 106 incident, Burns had spun off Puryear’s front bumper.  In the following incident, it was Puryear who went around after exchanging some contact with Burns.  After getting his car re-fired, as the field was still under caution, Puryear and Burns tangled, resulting in heavy damage to both cars and both cars being parked for the remainder of the race.

Puryear was unavailable for comment after the race and Burns declined to comment, other than to congratulate Hall on his victory.

The 150-lap Limited Late Model spectacle was marred by weather all weekend.  First, the race was postponed from its original Saturday date.  Then, after the field had completed 26 laps and was under caution when Brandon Head blew a motor, the sky opened, prompting a 107-minute delay.

The second delay, which lasted for over 80 minutes, came on lap 103 when part of the track surface came apart, prompting a sinkhole to form.  Safety crews were able to successfully patch the surface and conclude the race.

Allensworth went on to finish second to Hall – a result he was both disappointed and content with.

“Second’s always the first loser,” Allensworth commented.  “We were hoping to get one more spot but Connor ran a great race.  We got in so much trouble.  I think we passed the most cars here today.  We went to the back twice and came back through.

Brandon Clements finished in third while Tyler Horne and T.J. Barron rounded out the top-five.

Zach Miller picked up his third Legends win at Carteret County in 2019, passing Jason Alder early in the 35-lap race and pulling away.  His Miller Performance Motorsports teammate Caleb Heady finished in the runner-up spot while Alder came home third.  Jordan Lamothe and Jaiden Reyna rounded out the top-five.

Travis Miller picked up his second consecutive Battlefield Tire Pros Mini Stock feature win, this time holding back a challenge from Stephen Sanders.  Chase Singletary won the Mini Cup feature race while Morgan Odum held off younger sister Carmen to win in the Jr. Mini Cup race.

The next race at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway will take place on Saturday, September 1st with the fifth annual Moore’s Old-Tyme Barbeque, Chicken and Seafood Labor Day Classic.  Limited Late Models will be in action along with the Sportsman’s Wholesale Street Stocks, Battlefield Tire Pros Mini Stocks, U-CARs, Legends and Champ Karts.

Chris Chapman Prevails in Limited Late Model Thriller at Southern National

LUCAMA, NC – Chris Chapman snapped a near two-year winless drought at Southern National Motorsports Park on Saturday afternoon, holding off Andrew Grady in a thriller in the Easter Bunny 100.

Rusty Daniels started on the pole and won the first segment of the race while Chapman was biding his time. In the second segment, Chapman made the move, taking the lead on the 41st overall lap of the race and holding off numerous challenges from Daniels and Grady. The win was Chapman’s first since April 2016.

“It’s been about a year since we won one out here,” Chapman said in victory lane. “We had a couple seconds out here last year. These guys dug deep over the winter. Wendell Davis gives me the best cars. Sometimes, I don’t know if it’s driver or what. This thing was on a rail today.”

In the final 40 lap segment, Chapman held off a hard charging Andrew Grady. Grady closed in to within a half car-length, but Chapman was able to hold him off on the restarts and drive away in the final laps.

“Sometimes, you don’t want to wear [tires] down because you don’t know when you’re going to have a caution,” Chapman explained. “You try to go hard and save all you can too. So that’s pretty much what it was.”

Grady wanted to win the race and the race played out like he had hoped, but he had to settle for second. Grady took his second-place finish in stride as something to build on throughout the season.

“We had a plan and we played it perfectly,” Grady said. “We saved the right-rear really well. Chapman man, love racing him with. He’s real fun to race with. We just got a little snug towards the end. That’s where he beat us at. We’re going to be running for the championship here this year. It’s going to come down to me and him. They know we were here, that’s what matters.”

Grady was within striking distance in the final laps but was not close enough to make a clean pass for the win. While he could have divebombed the corner or taken Chapman out, Grady said that’s not how he races with a competitor he has respect for like Chapman.

“If I would have dove in there two car-lengths deeper, I could have rooted him,” Grady remarked. “I’m not going to do that to Chris. I don’t race like that. Some other people, I would have raced like that but with Chris, I love racing with him. He’s a great guy, always races me clean. We always race hard together. We’ll come back in a week or two and hopefully we’ll be up there one more.”

Paul Williamson quietly snuck into the third position in the final handful of laps for one of his best career finishes.

“We didn’t win but I call it a win because we came from the back and fought all the way back up,” Williamson said. “Our car was tight but we were able to work with it during the race.”

Rusty Daniels won the race’s first stage and ended up finishing fourth while Wayne Goss methodically raced his way to a fifth-place finish. The race was slowed by a number of cautions late as paint was traded in the middle of the pack.

 

Sibling Showdown in Legends

Caleb Day scored the win in a barnburner for the Legends division. Much of the race was a battle between Caleb and his younger sister Emily Day. Emily passed Caleb after a mid-race restart and appeared to be on her way to her first Legend Car win in only her second start, but Caleb got back around her in the final laps and went on to win.

“I don’t know if it was as fun as it was stressful,” Caleb Day said in victory lane. “I thought I had a pretty good car until that caution came out and we didn’t hit on much after that caution. I wasn’t going to push the topic with her. Me and her, I don’t know, third or fourth Legends race, I just let her go on. You could tell she’s got a little work to do, same as me. I hate her and Stancil got together and sent her to the rear. She had a second-place car before the caution and just as good a car after the caution. It was a good day and at least we didn’t tear anything up.”

Emily Day was running second on the last lap but was involved in an incident with Chris Stancil which sent the race into overtime. Caleb Day held off Eric Courtney and Kade Lambert for the win.

“It’s a good way to start the year off,” Caleb remarked. “We started running dirt Legends and been messing around with that and we decided to come back and try it since we were going to be down here anyway. We had fun, it was good.”

Emily Day ended up finishing fourth while Aaron Crumpler finished fifth.

 

AJ Sanders Goes 2-0 in Mini-Stocks

AJ Sanders was once again victorious in the Mini-Stock feature, racing his way from worst to first and besting Ronnie “Buckshot” Jones and Brandon Clements to score the win.

“I had a lot of determination,” Sanders said. “A lot of fans don’t know what went on but we put two new rights on after qualifying because everybody else had put them on before qualifying. We had a little bit of a gentlemen’s agreement that we were all going to run used tires, then when they put new ones on, it kind of pissed me off. I went and put two new ones on and they said someone was complaining, so I said okay and we’ll go to the rear and make a show for the fans.”

It was a show indeed. With 13 laps to go, Sanders battled side-by-side with Clements for the lead, but Clements would prevail in the battle which also allowed Jones to get around to take the second spot. Jones then took the lead from Clements with 11 laps remaining. Just three laps later, Sanders would get around Jones and hold on for the win – his second of the season at Southern National.

“I knew I had a little fast car than [Jones] did and had to calm back down and hit my marks,” Sanders explained. “That’s what we did, hit our marks. I’ve got to thank the good Lord above for a safe race. About lost it down there underneath Brandon. It felt like I hit oil or something. Maybe I just drove in too hard.”

Jones finished in the runner-up spot while Clements, James Stroud and Joseph Pittman rounded out the top-five.

Jake Garcia led wire-to-wire in the 35 lap USAC Eastern Midgets race, scoring the win over Neil Allison and Nolan Allison, Parker Frazier scored the win in the 25 lap Bandolero race over Cameron Murray and Ethan Johnson, and Mike Parrish picked up the win over Chris Hales and Dakota Tomlinson in the 15 lap Any Car feature.

Southern National Motorsports Park will be back in action on Saturday, April 14th for the Whelen Engineering Spring Fling. The Spring Fling will be headlined by twin 75 lap races for the Late Model Stock Car division and also features the Chargers for 40 laps, Mini-Stocks for 35 laps, Legends for 20 laps, Bandoleros for 20 laps and Any Cars for 15 laps.

Limited Late Models Prove Competitive in Recent SNMP History

LUCAMA, NC – Three different drivers have won in the last three Limited Late Model races held at Southern National Motorsports Park. Now the stage could be set for a fourth on March 31st.

Rusty Daniels, Jamie York, and Mini Tyrrell have won in the last three Limited Late Model races at Southern National. Daniels’ win came in October during the Spooktacular, while York and Tyrrell each scored victories in the Thanksgiving Classic.

Now, another competitive field is set to take to the high banks.

Daryn Cockram will be making the trip from Blacksburg, Virginia to compete in his black and yellow Limited Late Model. Cockram raced predominantly at Motor Mile Speedway but has made the decision to race at Southern National this season when Motor Mile canceled their oval track racing program.

“The Limited Late Models at Southern National are very competitive,” Cockram said. “You’ve got people like Bradley McCaskill and Deac McCaskill’s daughter is racing now, Tony and Andrew Grady as well. It’s the luck of the draw. That track changes daily. We were fast last year in practice, came back two weeks later with the same car and everything, and we were a seventh-place car. That track is one of its own and everybody is so close. If you’re not dead on, you’re going to lose four or five positions easily.”

Cockram has had strong runs at Southern National, even if the results have not done his performances justice. After racing in a handful of races in 2014, Cockram had been wanting to race full-time one season at Southern National. With his home track no longer hosting races, Cockram committed to a full season at the 4/10-mile track in Lucama, North Carolina.

“We’re going to run the full season at Southern National and South Boston,” Cockram explained. “Motor Mile affected a bunch of people when they closed. I always loved that track and have always been competitive. I always wanted to come down to Southern National and run a full season. When Motor Mile closed its doors, the first thing I said was I was fixing our car and heading down there.”

Kenansville, North Carolina’s Paul Williamson knows first-hand how competitive the Limited Late Model division is at Southern National Motorsports Park and he expects it to remain competitive in 2018.

“I think the Limited Late Model division will be stout,” Williamson said. “I expect there to be a lot of competitive racing in this division all season out at Southern National.”

Williamson has run regularly at Southern National for the past several seasons and knocked on the door of his first Late Model win. He scored seven top-five finishes in the regular season in the Late Model class last year and could be poised for a breakthrough Limited Late Model victory this season.

“I’m looking forward to racing this weekend at Southern National,” Williamson remarked. “We’re hoping to bring what we learned last year into this year and continue to get better. I feel we have a strong car and strong team.”

Cockram and Williamson will both join what is expected to be a very competitive field of Limited Late Models, which includes Rusty Daniels, Ashlyn McCaskill, Brandon Whitley and a host of others.

The Limited Late Model season will get underway on Saturday afternoon with the Easter Bunny 100. In addition to the 100-lap Limited Late Model race, Saturday’s program will feature the USAC Eastern Midgets, Mini-Stocks, Legends, Bandoleros and Any Cars. The green flag will fly at 2pm.

Saturday’s Easter Bunny 100-lap Limited Late Model race at Southern National Motorsports Park will be run under a segmented race format similar to what is used in NASCAR racing.

The first two segments of the Easter Bunny 100, which are sponsored by Mike Darne Racing, will run for 30 laps each while the final stage will run for 40 laps.  Following each of the first two stages, which will pay $50-to-win, a five-minute segment break will take place allowing teams to make adjustments.

“Making the race a segmented race will be exciting for the fans watching in the stands,” Southern National Motorsports Park general manager Charlie Hansen said.  “With each segment paying $50 to the winner, it gives the drivers something to race for in the middle of the race.  Hopefully, the fans and the drivers will enjoy this.”

The first segment will run through lap 30, followed by a five-minute break.  Then, the second segment will run through lap 60, followed by another five-minute segment break.  After that, the final 40 lap segment will be run under normal race conditions.

Mini Tyrell Victorious in Saturday Night Portion of 2017 Thanksgiving Classic

Lucama, NC – Mini Tyrell, the 13-year-old two-time Shenandoah Late Model track champion, put the final cherry on top of an incredible weekend by ending up in victory lane in Saturday’s portion of the 17th Annual Thanksgiving Classic presented by Solid Rock Carriers.

After earning the pole position earlier in the afternoon during group qualifying, Tyrell held onto the race lead for the first sixteen circuits before Friday night’s winner, Jamie York was able to get by the Manassas, Virginia driver. The top four drivers, in fact, were all right nose to tail for a little more than half the race until a caution was displayed on lap forty-five. From there it was mostly downhill from there.

The old saying in racing that ‘cautions breed cautions’ was certainly proven to be correct as things started to go downhill fast for a couple of drivers. Jamie York found himself to be on the wrong end of one of those deals after his night was finished earlier than the team planned when he was involved in a crash following the evening’s first restart.

Clay Jones, who had battled his way up to the front of the field, almost had his night come to a screeching halt after he spun in turn four battling hard with Paul Williamson – who had been leading the race at the time. Williamson and Jones were both sent to the rear their involvement in bringing out the yellow. Tyrell would inherit the lead and held off several challenges for the lead after a handful of restarts.

Tyrell’s family and crew were emotional in victory lane and for good reason.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend,” Tyrell told The Weekly Racer in victory lane Saturday night. “Being able to learn so much running with some of these guys and holding them off is just truly incredible. We lost a good friend a couple months ago that was like a brother to me, his birthday is Monday and I knew he was riding with me. I was just praying with about five laps to go that he would get me through it and sure enough he did.”

The victory comes just one day after Tyrell finished second to York in Friday nights “Dash for Cash” 40-lap feature and put a bookend on one of the biggest weekends in his young career.

“They [Tyrell’s crew] gave me an awesome car this weekend and we were just riding there for the first fifty laps just trying to conserve things,” Tyrell went on to say. “Unfortunately we got into the back of Jamie York and messed up the front end of the car a little bit, sorry to him for that but that’s just racing. Fell back to fourth trying to recover from that but was able to battle back to the front and lead the way the rest of the night.”

Gary Ledbetter Jr. took the victory in a thrilling 50-lap Street Stock feautre. Michael O’brien certainly did his fair share of making things interesting when he took things three wide a couple of times battling with Ledbetter in lap traffic. Gary Ledbetter Sr., Gerald Benton, and pole sitter Curtis Pebbles rounded out the top five finishers.

The 2017 Thanksgiving Classic will wrap up later this afternoon, as the green flag will wave for the 125-lap Super Late Model and 200-lap Late Model Sock features. Danny O’Quinn Jr. (SLM) and Lee Pulliam (LMSC) will lead their respective fields to green. Grandstands will open at 9:45 AM. An on-track autograph session is scheduled for 10:15 AM when the first green flag waving at approx. 12:00 noon.

Jamie York Scores First Career Limited Late Model Win Friday Night at Southern National

Lucama, NC – Jamie York, of Reidsville, North Carolina, scored his first career Limited Late Model win Friday night at just 17-years-old in the 40-lap “Dash for Cash” feature to kick off the 2017 Thanksgiving Classic.

York set quick time earlier in the afternoon with a time of 16.038-seconds (89.787 mph), just three-hundredths of a second quicker than 2017 Shenandoah Speedway track champion, Mini Tyrell. He and Tyrell, along with Renfrow would gap themselves from the rest of the field leaving Alex Flemming to be the early entertainment after starting from the back after serving a penalty after qualifying.

However, a lap twenty-one caution would bunch the field up and almost have a major outcome of the finish. Tyrell was able to work his way under and around York to lead a handful of laps. York was just a little bit faster and would take the lead back just four laps later. Even after a late race caution bunched the field up one final time, York was able to hold off charges Tyrell and Flemming. Clay Jones would cross the start-finish line in the fourth position after starting from the rear while Renfrow would be regulated to a fifth-place finish after struggling on both restarts.

Day two of the 17th Thanksgiving Classic presented by Solid Rock Carriers gets underway on Saturday with qualifying to determine the top-12 starters in the Late Model Stock Car feature race, which headlines Sunday.  Super Late Models will also qualify.  Following qualifying, feature racing will get underway with Bandoleros, Legends, Southern Lightning Modifieds, Mini Stocks, U-CARs, Street Stocks, Any Cars and a 75 lap Limited Late Model feature.

Qualifying for Saturday’s races gets underway at 1:20pm, Late Model qualifying (for Sunday’s races) will begin at 2:30pm and Saturday night’s features will commence at 4:30pm.

Rusty Daniels Back to Victory in Over A Year in the 2017 Southern National Spooktacular

Lucama, NC – It had been since Memorial Day weekend of 2016 that Rusty Daniels was in victory lane at Southern National Motorsports Park. Leading a race-high 83-laps Daniels dominated the Limited Late Model portion of the 4th Annual Spooktacular presented by NCDOT Click-it-or-ticket.

Daniels, from Alliance, North Carolina, started the 100-lap feature from the pole position posting the fastest time – 16.310 seconds – earlier in the afternoon during group qualifying. 2017 Shenandoah track champ Mini Tyrell rolled off the grid in the second position followed by Jonathan Cash, Paul Williamson, and John Jones. Daniels threw caution to the wind once the green flag was displayed and immediately pulled away from the rest of the field. Daniels would go on to lead all fifty laps of the first half of the race.

Daniels was regulated to the fourth spot for the second half the feature after Southern National officials let one lucky race fan pick the invert. JD Eversole would inherit the race lead and do a fine job holding onto it for several laps. Mini Tyrell, who had been running in the second position the entire first half of the race, was able to get under and around Eversole to take the race lead. It took Daniels just seventeen laps to get back up to the front of the field passing Tyrell for the lead. Daniels was not in the clear, however, as he had to hold off several late race restarts to hang onto the win.

“It’s very special,” Daniels said in victory lane about the win. “We brought a different car that we have never run here and we tested two weeks ago, this was the first time I have been on the track with it. It’s an eleven-year-old car but it drives like its brand new. We work hard on this stuff. I can’t thank all of my family and everybody enough that helps me with this.”

An emotional win for Daniels for sure as longtime friend Andy Smith and spotter was back on the radio as his eyes in the sky after two years.

“It’s nothing like connecting with someone on the radio,” Daniels went on to say. “We have raced a lot of years together. He had a couple surgeries and just couldn’t get back to the track but we broke him in right and won the race the first night he’s been back. I just can’t thank them enough for all they have done in my life for racing.”

Daniels went on to tell The Weekly Racer that he wasn’t too concerned with the invert itself but the people that were around him after the invert, citing that he had not raced around them that much and was hard to judge how much you can actually trust them. He also went on to say the crew made no adjustments during the five-minute break.

Jessica Jones, running a Lee Pulliam Performance prepared ride, capitalized on the final caution by avoiding the big wreck that happened in turn two as well as got a great restart with just five laps to go. Dana would take advantage of Tyrell’s slip out of turn four to finish in the second position. John Jones, father of Clay Jones, Minny Tyrell, and Jonathan Cash – who actually caught a piece of the wreck there at the end of the race – rounded out the top five finishers.

Bradley McCaskill Sets The Pace In The Limited Late Model Finale Saturday Night

Lucama, NC – It was Bradley McCaskill’s race from start to finish in Saturday nights 75 lap Mini’s Mission “Burn Rubber to Help Another” Limited Late Model feature. McCaskill, 27 from Knightdale, North Carolina, was second fastest earlier in the afternoon only to Alex Fleming. McCaskill and Fleming would be the pair to watch for most of the evening, as the two were in a league of their own.

“We got a great jump there at the start and got the lead,” McCaskill said after the race. “Our plan was to get up there and kind of set the pace and do what we need to do to save tires. Alex definitely ran us a lot harder than we anticipated and pushed me a lot harder than I wanted to go. I think he hurt his stuff there a little to much and we ended up getting back by him.”

Give credit to Alex Fleming, who will look to start his Super Late Model Sunday afternoon, for keeping young Bradley McCaskill honest all race long. The first half of the race Fleming applied plenty of pressure to the leader until he was able to get under and around McCaskill and even hold off an attempted cross over move. Fleming would hang onto the lead for about ten laps when McCaskill decided it was time to go and regained his spot at the top of the leader board with twenty-four laps to go.

Once he got around Fleming there it was nothing more than navigating his way through some lap traffic and staying smooth. Behind them was also some great racing for the final positions within the top five as well. Karl Budzevski, driver of the #26 was practically in a league of his own while Kenneth Mercer & Tim Allensworth had some fun.

It was clear by the end of the race that McCaskill had the car to beat Saturday night. In the car that won the 2016 Ronnie Barnnett Memorial at East Carolina Motor Speedway with Louis White behind the wheel, we asked Bradley if the cold weather had anything to do with the teams strategy going into the 75-lap feature.

“I think that’s where we had a little bit of an advantage,” said McCaskill. “The track gripped up a little more than I anticipated, I thought we were going a little to hard there for the track temperature but I guess it had a little bit more grip in it than I thought.”

Bradley went on to tell us that he might make the needed changes on the car and start the Late Model Stock race that will roll off the grid approx. 2:00 PM Sunday afternoon. Telling us that car owner Louis White said he could drive it if he wanted to. Grandstands are set to open Sunday morning around 9:45 AM with an on track driver autograph session scheduled for 10:15 – 11:30 AM. Pre race ceremonies should kick off at 11:45 followed by the green flag for the Super Late Model feature at 12:01 PM.
