Greg Edwards Looking for Sixth Late Model Stock Car Championship Tonight

Hampton, VA – The 2019 Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway will come to a close later this evening and six more champions will be unofficially crowned. Poquoson’s own Greg Edwards is looking to clinch his sixth track title tonight – twelfth combined for Edwards Motorsports. Edwards, who has already won three times as many races as the next person, is also looking to earn win number ten to close out his tremendous year. With tonight’s race being a single 100-lap feature he will have to work on a good qualifying run and saving his tires if he wants to be there at the end.

Connor Hall, who has had a breakout season of his own winning the Hampton Heat 200 and the Solid Rock Carries 150 at Carteret County Speedway collecting $10,000 in each race, comes into the weekend sitting second in points, only fifteen behind Edwards. With three wins to his credit, this season alone Hall has proven time and time again he knows how to run upfront. However, he will need some alignment of the stars if you will if he wants to steal the championship away from Edwards, something that is still mathematically possible. With each position on the track counting for one point, Connor Hall essentially needs to win tonights feature, have a full field of cars show up, per the NASCAR rulebook, and Edwards needs to have a DNF. Though the odds are stacked against the No. 77 Townebank/Blue Water Yacht Sales Toyota one thing we can certainly take to the betting table is that Connor and crew will certainly give it everything they have and more.

Defending series champion Danny Edwards (392) currently sits in third place with no mathematical chance to gain on either Hall or his brother. Brenden Queen (384) enters the night fourth in points trailing Danny by only eight points so we could see a change in third should Queen have a stellar night. Thomas Marks (337) who has also had a standout year should lock up fifth-place points by just starting the race.

In support divisions, we already know the Super Streets are going to put on a great show but with only 10 points separating Dale Parro and Gordon Weeks, we most certainly should expect to see a barn burner in that 40-lap feature. Rick Poust by virtue of taking the green flag should clinch the Super Truck championship as should rookie Mike Farley in the UCAR division. Another race we should keep our eye on is the Pro Six 30-lap feature. Jarred Clarke, who is actually winless on the season, enters the weekend with just a five-point lead over seven-time winner Travis Wall who missed the first couple races of the season.

Rodney Boyd Bounces Back for Twin Wins

Hampton, VA – After a couple tough outings for Rodney Boyd bounced back on Saturday claiming the pole for the first twin race of the night in the Pepsi Grand Stock divison. He ran a 18.177 second lap to beat out Tommy Sweeney’s 18.316 who was looking for his fourth in a row.

Right off the bat Sweeney’s night started rough getting stuck on the high line and fell to fourth within a couple laps. Meanwhile Boyd ran out to a second lead over Mark Frye. With nine laps to go Frye started reeling in Boyd while in turn-3 Tim Wilson spins out, but he was able to get it rolling again with no caution thrown.

With five laps to go Frye caught Boyd and made contact with the leader and was sent to the rear of the field with the call from the tower saying he was driving too agressively, Boyd also went to the rear for being involved. On the restart Paul Lubno went low as the leader and Sweeney went high but it didn’t work out for him. Boyd wasted no time getting back up front and under Lubno for the lead. With Boyd coming to the checkers Shawn Scovel and Wilson spun out down the back stretch.

Race Two

After the invert Kevin Morgan started on the pole with Frye’s substitute driver Brandon Hinson to his outside. Two laps in and they were three wide down the back stretch as the faster cars started coming through the field. A lap later Wilson body slams against Boyd to take over fourth place. Caution would fly with a scary incident involving Sweeney, his driveshaft came apart and at first it looked like it may have come through his floor board. Fortunately it had just hit the floor har enough to dislodge the onboard extinguisher which shot into his arm, leaving the driver sore but no broken bones.

On the restart Lubno kept the lead as Wilson fell to second place and started to come under pressure from Boyd. Boyd got by quickly and started going after Lubno with eleven laps to go in the race. Boyd made the pass on the inside for the lead with Hinson not wasting any time to get by Lubno for second. With under five laps to go Hinson ran out of time to try and take the checkers and Boyd got his second win of the night and his fifth of the season. With the updated points he sit backs nine points from Sweeney who is in the lead.

Twin Races Equals Twin Wins for Balluzzo and Sweeney

Hampton, VA The IMCA style Larry King Law Modifieds returned to Langley Speedway for another night of twin racing around the historic track. Points leader Shawn Balluzzo missed out on the pole to the driver who’s right behind him. Matt Carter ran a 16.784 to Shawn’s 16.901 to lead the field to the green flag.

Off the start Carter cleared Balluzzo easily and after a couple laps he had a few cars between him and the second place runner. Matt held him off for much of the race but on the twenty-first lap Balluzzo is able to get by him as they went through some lapped traffic. Shawn cruised to the win in the first mod race of the night after that. Farther back Andrew Fortin was able to get into third passing Matt Slye and Bobby Gery after starting last moved up to 8th, he had problems with the car through practices and was not able to qualify.

With that finish he moved to the pole for the second race start and Balluzzo opted to start on the rear for his bonus national points if he can win. Gery, still battling mechanical problems, let the field go so nothing bad would happen. Jamie Sample took the lead on the first lap and then Bubba Johnston took over on the second lap while the field shuffled behind them. Sample led again on the sixth lap and Balluzzo was making his way up to sixth place. The caution would fly as Donnie Holston made contact with Gery causing him to spin out.

On the restart Balluzzo stayed low moving himself into third place and wasted no time getting into second position. On the 18th lap Shawn got by Sample for the lead and Danny Harrell was able to move into second as Sample started falling off a bit. With a big lead Balluzzo grabbed his second win of the night, 7th on the season, and the extra national points.

 

Pepsi Grand Stocks

Tommy Sweeney in Victory Lane – CREDIT: John Long

In the Pepsi Grand Stocks Rodney Boyd ran the fast time of a 18.401 after having a rough last outing. Tommy Sweeney, who has three wins on the season, missed out on the pole by .022. The two drivers have some history from this year but the start of the race went off with no troubles. Five laps in and Sweeney was still almost glued to Boyd’s bumper and a couple laps Sweeney started giving him some bumps, and on lap-8 it was good enough to get Boyd loose and Tommy took the lead. Paul Lubno and Mark Frye weren’t far behind and started putting on a lot of pressure to Boyd. Lubno gave Frye a good door to door slap to Frye and beat him to the line but couldn’t get by him. Frye eventually got around Boyd on the high line to take second place. With two to go Johnathon White shoves Tom Wilson up the track for 5th while Sweeney cruises to his fourth win.

Shawn Scovel finished 8th so he has the gift of the invert pole for the second race. With only nine cars in the field Sweeney tried his luck falling back to ninth for extra points. Two laps in and and Sweeney was up to fifth already while Wilson passed Scovel for the lead. Just six laps into the race and Tommy was into third with Scovel in front of him after Boyd nudged him out of the way for second. Fifteen laps in and Sweeney gets under Boyd for the lead and Frye sneaks by as well. Boyd made a last ditch effort to move Frye coming to the finish but he stays in third while Sweeney sweeps the night and snags his fifth win.

 

Bobby McCarty Steals Thrilling Hampton Heat Victory With His First Visit to Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway

Hampton, VA – Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway was certainly the place to be if you were in the state of Virginia this past weekend. Thirty of some of the best in the business converged on the .395-mile oval for a chance to win $10,000 and better their position in the VA Triple crown – a three race series between South Boston, Langley Speedway, and Martinsville that also pays $10,000. From qualifying till lap 190 fans in the stands and all over the world on Fanschoice.tv were watching the CE Falk show. That was until Bobby McCarty, of Summerville North Carolina, had another idea on how he thought the race would end.Spending most of the race weekend towards the tail end of the top ten, with the exception of the Friday afternoon test session – which by the way was his first time turning laps at Langley – where he posted the sixth fastest time of the day, McCarty seemed to just be riding and biding his time. Qualifying just outside the top ten (P12) the most recent South Boston Speedway winner would stay there during the first half of the race ensuring the nose and tires stayed under the car.

Once the green flag was displayed for the second half, it was on. Not just for the field – seeing’s how over 80% of the caution periods came from the second half – but for Bobby McCarty who, for the most part, worked his way up through the field methodically. There were a few scary moments for the eventual winner, especially on a couple restarts when things got dicey working through turns one and two. Things would all change for McCarty in a big way late in the race when Nick Smith was finally able to get door to door with Falk, who at the time had led all 188 laps of the race. Smith would battle Falk the hardest he had all night to take the lead on lap 190 but the intensity of that exchange may have hurt the performance of Nick’s car and McCarty was able to make the pass down the backstretch and lead lap 190. After that, there were not enough laps left in the race for the hard charging machine of Brenden Queen to close the gap.

McCarty, for the lack of better terms, was floored in victory lane and gave much glory and gratification for everyone on his team that helped him get to where he was.

“They told me to ride there the first half and save my right rear,” McCarty said in victory lane. “Then at lap one-hundred one, they told me to go for it. We got some good breaks and made some good moves which helped us stay up front. When Smith and Falk opened the door we were close enough to capitalize and we just set sail from there.”

Coming fresh off a win the week prior at South Boston Speedway, McCarty seemed to be able to keep that momentum rolling. Once we were in victory lane with McCarty we asked him what was going through his mind after winning one of the biggest races of the year for Langley Speedway but maybe for Late Model racing on in the Mid-Atlantic, on just his first try.

“Is this real?” McCarty laughed in victory lane. “I just can’t believe it. I have to thank all these guys. All the people at Autos By Nelson, Nelson Motor Sports, The Three Amigo’s, Vally Star Credit Union, Liquid Performance, Good Ridges, and everyone who puts effort into this race car. This is for them. They did all the work.”

With the victory in round two of the Triple Crown, by our calculations, McCarty and Smith will enter the Valley Star Credit Union 300 tied with an average finish of 3.5. We also asked the driver of the double duce what the plan was for the rest of the year and heading into Martinsville, which will be the first stock car race under the new permanent LED light system.

Win races!” McCarty said with force. “Win every race I possibly can. We have had an up and down year with some bad luck but we are out here on a mission to win races and that is what we are going to do. “

#HamptonHeat Who to Watch: The Weekly Racer Staff Pick Their Top 5 Winners

The 9th Annual Hampton Heat is now just days away and the entry list is starting to be finalized. On the eve of the open test, Shawn and I wanted to give you our thoughts on who to watch out for on Saturday. Mind you, our picks were done completely separate from each other, interesting how they came out very similar. What are your picks?

 

Greg Edwards

There are not many drivers in the Late Model community that has won more races at Langley than Greg Edwards. Edwards kicked off 2017 in an incredible way picking up wins and leading the points. That was until a string of bad luck plagued the team. Edwards, another veteran driver who has yet to collect a prestigious Hampton Heat win, enters this weekend in a rebound after splitting twin races with Philip Morris in “The Prelude to the Heat.” As long as Edwards stays up front and avoids the black cloud that followed him around lately, look for him to be a very strong contender.

 

Philip Morris

Morris is on a hot streak this summer collecting wins at South Boston, Motor Mile, and even Langley Speedway. Morris is also the current VA Triple Crown series leader with his victory at the first of the month in the Harley Davidson 200. Morris continued to find ways into victory lane the following weeks. The multi time NWASS has never won a Hampton Heat in its eight-year history. However, the way he dominated second twin feature, two weeks prior, Morris cannot be counted out.

Peyton Sellers

Though Sellers is not a Langley regular he cannot be left off this list due to the sheer dominance the former NWAAS national champ & Xfinity driver showed during the first leg of the VA Triple Crown. Not to mention Sellers has won this event back in 2013 while piloting the 99 machine. What also sticks out to us here at TWR was his ability to roll out his backup car, that had no laps on it in the prior 48 hours and wheel it to two fourth place finishes. Sellers will be one car that everyone, fans, drivers, and crews will need to keep an eye on.

Matt Waltz

Just a couple of years ago the Newport News native was the man to beat when it came time for this race. 2014 seemed to be the year for Matt Waltz and his team as they entered this weekend with eight wins, fastest in practice the day before, fastest in happy hour practice the day of, and set a blistering pace throughout the race. 2014 was also when Waltz, along with Nick Smith, was penalized for coming down pit road too early at the break. The penalty put Waltz deep in the field where we would ultimately succumb to damage received in a crash. Waltz has been steady this year as we entered the weekend as the points leader and one win. This will certainly be a race he would like to check off his list and should have the car to do it come Saturday night.

CE Falk

Falk is a love em or hate em kind of racer. Especially when it comes to Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway. In years past, Falk was almost invincible when he pulled in and unloaded. Winning 32 races between 2009 & 2011 where he won the Late Model championship each year, then again in 2013, it is safe to say that Falk knows his way around the speedway. Not to mention of the eight total Hampton Heats, Falk has won 37.5% of the events. With a victory already this season, Falk will surely be a force to be reckoned with this weekend.

Sleeper: Nick Smith

This was a hard one! For multiple reasons. Smith is coming off a dominant 2016 season where he won the track championship at Dominion Raceway with around twelve wins. Currently sitting third in points this year at Langley Speedway with two wins under his belt, however, has run into some bad luck as well. Smith is also coming off a third place finish and is the highest ranked Langley driver in the triple crown series, where with the help of the invert, almost stole the victory. Smith will have to hope the cards fall his way throughout qualifying to avoid having to run deep in the hornet’s nest to keep his nose clean. The inaugural Hampton Heat winner will also have to put behind him the same mistake Matt Waltz made in 2014 if he wishes to call himself a repeat Hampton Heat winner. Nick has the car, the speed, and the talent to get it done. Will he have the luck?

Editor’s Pick: Connor Hall

He’s been killin it at Carteret, a track very similar to Langley when he’s gone down there and hasn’t been doing half bad here at Langley. Led a couple laps and is always running pretty fast when he doesn’t have bad luck. If he can keep his nose clean for the first hundred eighty laps, he might have something for them at the end.

Honorable Mentions:  Mark Wertz, Stacy Puryear, Danny Edwards, Jr., Timothy Peters

I literally spent days racking my thoughts around this one and come to the conclusion that there are probably 10, maybe 12 drivers on our pre-entry list that could win this weekend. Stacy Puryear was almost our sleeper pick due to his performance at South Boston, however, with his limited experience at the .395-mile oval, we feel that might be his only hindrance.

Mark Wertz & Danny Edwards, Jr. are always threats to win any given Late Model race at Langley Speedway and with their vast knowledge how the track changes throughout the day will certainly help both drivers.

Timothy Peters is another driver who is someone you should pay close attention to at any track he pulls into. With Red Horse Racing suspending operations earlier this year, it has allowed for Peters to run the Late Model more. He will certainly be looking to check the Hampton Heat off his list of races won.

 

Shawn’s Picks;

Philip Morris – The 4-time National Late Model champ finally got his first win at Langley Speedway in his last outing at the track. He made it look so easy that he is a good choice for winning his first Hampton Heat.

Peyton Sellers After loaning the motor from his car he tested and practiced with at Langley, Sellers hopped in his backup and qualified well and finished fourth in both races.

CE FalkCE has won the 200 lap event three times and finished third place in both races on NAPA Night.

Matt WaltzRoutinely challenging for the pole and wins at Langley Speedway, Matt is hungry for that first Hampton Heat win.

Greg Edwards The Hampton Heat win has eluded the 5-time track champion but he has had the car dialed in all season so far.


Dark Horse: Timothy Peters

After having his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team unexpectedly close their doors Peters has returned to the late model series. Look for this driver to be up on the wheel this weekend trying to get his first Hampton Heat win.
