Danny Edwards Jr. Wins the 2018 Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown Pole Award

Hampton, VA – Danny Edwards, Jr. from Poquoson, Virginia and five-time Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway track champion laid down the quickest lap during euro style qualifying earlier in the evening. Edwards’ 15.359-second (92.584) was just four-hundredth’s of a second quicker than the host driver Denny Hamlin. Hamlin’s Monster Energy Cup teammate and defending two-time cup series winner Kyle Busch will start the 200-lap feature from the third position with truck series driver Timothy Peters and Ty Gibbs – grandson to Joe Gibbs – round out the top five.

“We took off where we left off last race,” Edwards told The Weekly Racer. “We thought we had a pretty good car. Made a few changes at the shop but when we got here today we found ourselves fighting it. We worked at it and threw a lot of things at it and to be honest with you we hit on something at the very end of the practice, made a couple big swings and I told the guys this was the best I have had it on the long run.”

Edwards, as mentioned above, is surrounded by some of the best in auto racing and well… he was not only shocked by it but was aware of who he had around him.

“To be honest with you it surprised me,” Edwards went on to say. “I didn’t think that was going to stick seeings how we went out mid-pack and some of those guys going out later. Hopefully, we can control our race a little bit better when the green flag drops. The only thing you can control is what you do.”

Edwards will take the green flag with probably the most experience and the most laps completed at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway, however, he knows when the helmets go on and they strap in it goes out the window.

“I have raced with these guys before with Denny and Kyle in some of the ASA series,” Edwards said. “You take the guys that are here that are the pro drivers and they are professional’s for a reason, they are the best in the business. Do I have more laps at this track? Yea, but they are the absolute best in the world. I am just pleased to be up here and run with them.”

In a normal 200-lap feature there is only one break for tires, fuel, or just adjustments. However, tonight’s race will be run in three segments. Segment one drivers are able to take up to four tires, adjustments but no fuel. We asked Edwards if that changed his strategy throughout the evening.

Not really,” Edwards said honestly. “How the race goes throughout the stints will dictate what we do. We really won’t know until we get some laps on the car and make some adjustments on how the car felt in the first half. It’s going to be about keeping it clean, keeping the fenders on it and the breaks on it.”

Green flag is set to fly for the feature event at 8:30 PM. If you are unable to make it out follow us on Twitter or watch LIVE on Fanschoice.tv

DHSTS 2015SOUTH BOSTON, VA – 2014 NASCAR XFINITY Series Champion Chase Elliott joins NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Ragan and Virginia’s own Timothy Peters as early headliners to race against host Denny Hamlin in the eighth-annual Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown at South Boston Speedway on April 23. This 200-lap charity Late Model race showcases the best Late Model racers in the region against NASCAR counterparts with event proceeds benefiting the Denny Hamlin Foundation and its on-going support of Cystic Fibrosis research and treatment.

The trio join three more Virginia stock car racing natives Hermie Sadler, Jeb Burton and Gray Gaulding in going to battle against the likes of Late Model drivers Matt Bowling, the 2014 Showdown winner, and CE Falk, who was the first Late Model winner of the Showdown in 2010 at Southside Speedway.

“With a record amount of drivers committed to run the Short Track Showdown, this event looks to be one of the most competitive fields that we have seen,” said Hamlin, another Virginia native who last won the Showdown in 2011 at Richmond International Raceway. “None of these drivers like to lose, they are all as competitive as I am. Anyone of them can make it to victory lane.”

Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown Returns to Virginia’s South Boston Speedway for Second Year

2015 DHSTS flyerSOUTH BOSTON, VA – The Denny Hamlin Foundation announced today that April 23, 2015 marks the eighth edition of the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown and the second consecutive year the celebrity Late Model charity race will be held at South Boston Speedway (Va.). The Showdown, which features top NASCAR drivers competing against the best regional Late Model drivers, again serves as a weekday prelude to the weekend NASCAR races at Richmond International Raceway.  Proceeds from the Showdown go to support the Denny Hamlin Foundation, which has donated $150,000 in grants to help fund the Denny Hamlin Cystic Fibrosis Research Lab at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-accredited Therapeutics Development Center at VCU.

“Keeping the race at South Boston for 2015 was a no-brainer for me,” said Hamlin, who regularly raced at South Boston before he made the jump to NASCAR. “Not only did it bring back a little bit of NASCAR to the South Boston community, it also brought one of the most competitive fields we have seen at this event so far.  The fans nearly sold out South Boston last year, and with the interest that we have already seen this year, I believe we will sell-out South Boston, and provide fans with another thrilling event.”
