Thunder Road Harley Davidson 200 “Who to Watch”

Ladies and gentlemen. Boys and girls. It’s that time! Time for some big time Late Model Stock Car Racing. Round one of the 2019 Virginia Triple Crown series kicks off this evening at South Boston Speedway for their annual Thunder Road Harley Davidson 200. Thirty plus cars have converged on the .400-mile Speedway all bunting for the big pay day.

Josh’s Pick 5

Phillip Morris – It’s Phillip Morris, how could you not pick him as a favorite? Yeah he’s had an up and down season, but when you put Morris and a big race at SoBo together, you’re going to get the best Morris there is. After finishing second to Sellers last year in this race, Phillip looks to get that one extra position to put him in victory lane this year.

Lee Pulliam – He’s put all his dedication into South Boston this season by running a full season there. He’s fourth in points at the track and has two wins, he’s coming off a last place finish in the most recent Late Model race. He’ll be looking to turn his luck around with a strong finish.

Bobby McCarty – Bobby has ran the CARS tour series for a few years now and he won the championship last season. Anywhere McCarty goes, he’s a top three runner. This will be McCartys first appearance at South Boston since last years 200 lap race where he finished fifth.

Peyton Sellers – Sellers will be looking to defend his title as last years winner this year. He’s the points leader at the track, he’s had strong runs at multiple tracks and wins at multiple tracks this season. Being first in national points also gives him a boost to run his best with a big car count expected for more points towards a national championship.

Josh Berry – Berry has been strong in every single CARS tour race this season. Late race luck just hasn’t been on his side, but the other drivers know who’s been the top performer. After breaking through and picking up the win at Dominion last weekend, Berry looks to continue his dominant performances going into this weekend.

Dark Horse:

Thomas Scott – Scott runs well in any big race he goes to. He’s third in points at South Boston, five out of nine races this season he’s finished in the top five with two runner up finishes. He had a chance to win the inaugural Grass Roots 200 at Langley Speedway earlier this year, until a late race wreck ended his night. He finished 17th last year, he’s looking to improve that stat a lot this year.

Justin’s Pick 5

Peyton Sellers – You would be crazy to count Peyton Sellers out of any race he shows up to. It would be even more wild to count him out at his home track of South Boston. Sellers is your current points leader at the speedway as well as NWAAS points. Sellers also posted times in the low 15’s yesterday during practice. Keep your eyes in that white and orange two-six come race time.

Philip Morris – I would have to second Josh’s statement from above. It’s Philip Morris, how can you not pick this man as a favorite. He has won at just about every track he’s been to. You could also argue that Morris is not hitting on all cylinders this year like he was last year. Either way, Morris will certainly be a front runner and a contender at the end of the feature.

Mike Looney – The saying strike when the iron is hot comes to mind with this pick. The former ValleyStar Credit Union 300 winner knows how to deal with pressure in these big races and has certainly been hitting on something out at his home track in the mountains of Virginia. Last week he picks up a win in his first visit to Langley Speedway. Look for Looney to ride that momentum into tonight feature.

Timothy Peters – So he hasn’t been in a Late Model Stock much this year but it’s Timothy Peters. Not to mention when you have the backing of Berry Nelson you know your going to have some of the best equipment out there. If Peters can keep the nose clean he will most certainly be a car to watch in the closing laps.

Brenden Queen – You might say this is more suited for a dark horse or sleeper pick but let me take a second to tell you why we don’t think so. Queen has always done well in these long distances races. He has also been more determined than ever this year to perform. He has also teamed up with car owner Andre Grier which, despite some obvious growing pains and learning the car, has proven to be a good partnership. Queen will need to focus on keeping tires under his machine and make the right moves at the right time. If he can do that there is a chance we may see him in victory lane.

Dark Horse

Mark Wertz – Yup, I said it! Don’t sleep on the Chesapeake native. Wertz stepped back from full time competition this year to assist in the development of Connor Hall. One thing this has allowed him to do is pick and choose the races he wants to run. What’s the benefit in that? Focused attention. Wertz has plenty of experience at South Boston to be a real threat. With him stepping away from full time driving it’s just enough for other drivers to “count him out” which makes him dangerous.

Pollard, McCarty Muscle Into CARS Tour Victory Lane at Motor Mile

RADFORD, VA – The Heritage Truck Centers 250 was the first time the CARS Tour visited Motor Mile Speedway since 2015, and Saturday night’s action made up for the long hiatus when Bubba Pollard and Bobby McCarty muscled their way to Edelbrock Victory Lane. For Pollard, it was his third tour win this season and the first for McCarty in nearly a year.

Matt Craig claimed the Mahle Pistons Pole Award and led the field to the green flag in the opening race of the night. Second place starter Bubba Pollard nosed ahead of Craig to lead lap one before the Kannapolis, N.C, retook the top spot on lap two and held it for over a third of the race.

Pollard began to show his speed on lap 47 when he bypassed Craig for the top spot, but Craig found a way back around on lap 59. The pair continued to trade blows, moving each other out of the way multiple times before Pollard ultimately took the lead for the final time on lap 78 after a caution for Mike Speeney’s problems in turn three.

Despite Pollard’s late-race dominance, Craig threw everything at the No. 26 Ford when he attempted to outduel Pollard on a lap 114 restart. Having none of it, race control thwarted his work when the restart was called back as a jumped restart and reattempted with Pollard on the inside lane where he motored away after the green flag.

Pollard extended his lead to a .686-second advantage at the checkered flag, beating Craig, Stephen Nasse, Tate Fogleman and Kodie Conner to the line.

“When you drive good stuff, got good people behind you, they make it easy on you,” said Pollard in Edelbrock Victory Lane when asked about how he has pulled off three wins so far this season.

“When you drive me dirty, I’m going to drive you back dirty, and that’s all there is to it,” he continued when prompted about the battle with Matt Craig. “When you run me up the racetrack, I’m going to let you know it. It could have been a lot cleaner than what it was, and it wasn’t. It’s part of racing if he wants to drive like that. You’re looking at a new Bubba Pollard. I’ve kinda been easy on people, kind of just rolled with the flow, but I ain’t taking no [expletive] off nobody no more. If you touch that 26 car, you’re gonna be ready for it.”

Four years ago, Josh Berry picked up his first CARS Tour win at Motor Mile Speedway and picked up where he left off by rocketing to the Hedgecock Racing Pole Position during qualifying. As expected, he shot to the lead early over second place starter Deac McCaskill.

The opening two-thirds of the race was exceptionally clean, with two caution flags on laps 40 and 80 thrown by rule according to the series’ competition caution policy. After lap 80, however, things got crazy when Taylor Gray lost control exiting turn four which started a massive chain reaction melee that collected at least ten cars in one fashion or another. Multiple drivers were eliminated from the race afterward.

Bobby McCarty, who had moved to second during the opening two stints, challenged Josh Berry on the restart but was unable to steal to the top spot despite a quick outside lane at Motor Mile. A slew of late-race accidents including four cautions in the final scheduled 25 laps, gave McCarty multiple opportunities to bypass Berry but none of them yielded any results.

Josh Berry took the white flag after 124 laps and appeared to be en route to his 16th career when Brandon Pierce sent Ryan Repko for a spin in turn two, forcing officials to throw the yellow before the leader had taken the checkered flag, prompting a green-white-checkered restart.

On the initial attempt, Berry bypassed McCarty in turn three, but washed up the track allowing McCarty to drive to his inside in turn one. The two made contact, and Berry went spinning up the track, handing McCarty the race lead and relegating Berry to the tail.

The second attempt at a finish saw McCarty choose the high line for his restart lane, while Justin Carroll started underneath. The pair leaned on each other while others pushed and shoved behind them. They took the white flag in a near dead heat and made the final circuit door-to-door before racing off turn four to the checkered flag where Bobby McCarty edged out Carroll in a photo finish of .029 seconds. Sammy Smith, Brandon Pierce, and Tommy Lemons, Jr., rounded out the top five.

“I really hate that with the 88, I really do, he knows I don’t race that way,” McCarty said after thanking his crew in Edelbrock Victory Lane. “He was trying to pinch me, and I was trying to run him up a little bit, and we hit wheels. It yanked the wheel right out of my hand. I’ve never wrecked nobody for a win, I never have and I never will, that was just a racing incident. Hopefully he and I can talk about it and come to an agreement. But, like I said, a big thank you to everyone at Nelson Motorsports. My wife and son are here, and it’s he first time they’ve come in a long time, so this is a really cool moment for me.

“When that [lap 124] caution came out, I was worried, because they can cause a lot of problems,” he continued when asked about the setup for the finish. “You never know how these restarts are going to play out. Josh didn’t get to the throttle really good coming out of four, and I was able to pull the crossover and we got position on him and that was unfortunate and I really hate that happened. I didn’t know whether to take the inside or the outside on the last restart because I was losing forward drive and that’s where the 88 was killing us. I felt like if someone was on our outside, I wasn’t going to be able to get the throttle down. We took the outside, Justin’s a really hard racer, he races hard but he races clean, and I hope the fans enjoyed that show.”

The next event for the CARS Racing Tour will take place June 8 at Langley Speedway, the Who’s Your Driver 125, a standalone event for the late model stock cars with support from three local divisions at a highly-competitive .395-mile layout on the east coast of Virginia.

Three Cars From Top Ten Times Were Disallowed After Failing Post Qualifying Inspection; Will Start from the Rear of Their Respective Heat Races

Ridgeway, VA – Post qualifying tech has officially wrapped up here at Martinsville Speedway. Once again the “Room of Doom” has shaken things up on the eve of arguably the best race of the year in the Late Model Stock Car community.

Bobby McCarty (22), Todd Gilliland (45), and Matt Bowling (83) were all found to have issues with the rear ends of their machines. NASCAR officials have stated that all three teams will have the opportunity to fix the issues in the morning, roll back through tech and should they fix all the issues, they have the chance to start their respective heat races from the rear. The speedway also clarified that the no. 70 of Dylan Ward and no. 44 Kyle Dudley both completed engine swaps and will start behind the three cars mentioned above.

Fan gates open at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the driver autograph session scheduled for 1-2:30 p.m. on the front stretch. Three 25-lap qualifying races, followed by the 25 lap LCQ to set the field will start at 3 p.m. The 200-lap feature race will begin at 8:00 p.m.Motor Racing Network’s live coverage of the race and the free online stream of the race, on FansChoice.tv, will begin at 7:30.

The 10th Annual Hampton Heat is Finally Upon Us — Who to Watch Tonight

After almost a full extra month of waiting due to Mother Nature, it is time for some of the best Late Model Stock Car drivers to get after it later this evening all battling for the prestigious trophy, points towards the Virginia Triple crown, oh and how did we almost forget… $10,000!

Twenty-five cars made the trip out for the annual Friday test session giving those of us who followed on Race Monitor all day long in our offices an idea of what to expect later this evening. A complete list of practice times can be found a little further down this column. We will say that we fully expect thirty or more cars for the actual event. Make sure you have plans to make it out later this afternoon as it will not be broadcasted on Fanschoice! Gates will open to the public at 12:15 PM, “Happy Hour” for Late Models roll off approx. 12:30 PM. Green flag is expected to to drop at 7:00 PM EDT.

So, this might be your first time out to the speedway this year and you are wondering who to watch out for, right? Well folks we have you covered in that department. Don’t wanna do research? That’s cool. Let’s take a look at the top five drivers we feel are going to be a threat, in no particular order of course.

Philip Morris

Obvious, right? We know but we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t put Morris on the who to watch list. Morris certainly has made a name for himself and drawn a lot of attention to the No. 01 Trailer Town USA Chevrolet this year has he makes a solid bid for another national title. Morris has found victory lane at just about every track he’s been to this year. Even though Morris “struggled” in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown earlier this year – a similar 200 lap endurance type race – he had found victory lane seven times this year at Larry King Law Langley Speedway, often times starting in the rear of the field for the second race. Oh and not to mention Morris was fastest at the conclusion of practice Friday afternoon with a 15.816.

Danny Edwards Jr.

Take away the fact Edwards has multiple track championships, more than a decade of experience, and have completed more laps at Langley Speedway to make multiple cross country road trips across this great nation, Danny Edwards Jr. has been firing on all cylinders this year. With two wins under his belt, Edwards enters the weekend as the current points leader of the Taylor Waste Services Late Model — he leave the same way no matter what as the Hampton Heat will not count towards track points — but we think it’s more important to point out that Edwards might be the only track regular to have an answer to the pure speed of Morris. If you remember back to April, Edwards earned the pole in the DHSTS and looked to be a force until a wreck took him out. A win tonight could not come at a more perfect time as it would also be his first Hampton Heat victory but it would come on the two year anniversary of the loss of former crew chief John McMasters.

C.E. Falk

CE Falk? He doesn’t even race at Langley on a regular basis, how is he going to be a factor? Well, it’s very simply put. He’s CE Falk and if you don’t respect his ability any time he pulls into Langley Speedway then that’s your first mistake. The car number will be different on race day — he will be in a 02 car — but will still be a factor towards the front. Falk clocked in with just the eighth fastest time Friday afternoon but there was no way to confirm the age of his tires. Falk was also a major factor in the DHSTS and there is no doubt he will be a key player later tonight.

Connor Hall

Yup, we went there! And it’s about time for this young driver to go there again! As you can see pictures above, Hall has already found victory lane once towards the end of last year at his home track and he has certainly carried that speed over into 2018. Constantly running qualifying and running up front this season and coming off of a pole and win at East Carolina Motor Speedway the week prior, Connor Hall will certainly have the momentum going for him. Our biggest concern with Hall will be his patients. 2018 has been filled with 50-75 lap sprint races. He will have to physically and mentally keep the car under him, fenders straight, and tires up for 200 laps. If he can do all three of those things he will certainly have the speed to be a contender.

Bobby McCarty

Want to talk about who’s on fire this year, well see the driver pictured above. Bobby McCarty enters the 10th Annual Hampton Heat 200 not only as the defending champion but he is also the current points leader for the CARS Tour Late Model Series with one pole and four wins in nine starts. Not to mention McCarty posted the third quickest time in Friday’s test session. Traveling with the CARS Tour this year has given McCarty the chance to learn different track surfaces and really improve his skill. Look for him to hover around the top quarter of the field when it’s time to go green.

Honorable Mentions:

Greg Edwards: He has never won the prestigious event but is always a threat to find victory lane when he straps in at Langley Speedway. With a little luck he may come out on top.

Nick Smith: He didn’t earn the nickname “Quick Nick” for no reason. Smith is always fast around Langley and even though he is running a limited schedule this year, has already collected a win. However, could the limited race schedule this year hurt the inaugural Hampton Heat winner?

Peyton Seller: Crazy, right? How in the world does Peyton Sellers only make an honorable mention? We will just have to chalk it up to gut feeling and look to be proved wrong. Sellers is a contender everywhere he goes and he has without a doubt done his homework and is a previous winner. As the winner of the opening round of the VA Triple Crown at South Boston, will Sellers be aggressive and go for the win or play things safe to set himself up for an easier outing at Martinsville next month? Either way, Sellers could easily dominate this race tonight, only time will tell.

Nick Smith and Bobby McCarty Tied Going Into Final Segment of the 2017 Virginia Triple Crown Series

A lot will be on the line this weekend when over eighty Late Model Stock cars make the return trip to Ridgeway, Virginia for the largest race of the season for these weekend worries. Take away the $25,000 check to the winner, take away the chance to bring home a famous grandfather clock to your shop, throw out the fact that this will be the first event under the permanent LED lights. Well okay, don’t really throw that out because it is almost everything that anyone is talking about. With all of that going on this weekend we do not want to forget that one driver will leave The Paperclip as the 2017 Virginia Triple Crown Champion and net no less than $10,000.

For those who may not know, the Virginia Triple Crown is a three-race, three track series, where the winner is the one driver who competes in all three races and accumulates the highest average finish. The series is kicked off at South Boston Speedway with their annual running of the Thunder Road Harley Davidson 200, the speedways riches race of the year. Followed very closely by The Hampton Heat 200 hosted by Langley Speedway, all to come to a head in the fall at Martinsville Speedway.

Two drivers will unload Friday afternoon deadlocked at the top of the leaderboard so to speak with an average finish of 3.5. Give the nod to Bobby McCarty, the most recent winner of the Hampton Heat, as he has the better finishing position between him and Hampton’s own, Nick Smith. McCarty, who failed to make the show in 2013 & 2015, looks to improve on his 24th place finish from last year after replacing teammate Timothy Peters, as well as notch another accomplishment off his belt as well as become the 2017 Virginia Triple Crown champ. McCarty felt good this past week at the Thursday night test expressing his plan his to save the car and his breaks and go all out at the end.

Nick Smith took the more consistent approach to earn his position tied at the top of the standings. Not discrediting McCarty’s runs in both races but a third-place finish at South Boston and a fourth-place finish at his home track for the Hampton Heat should go to show that Nick Smith is a force to be reckoned with in these long distance races. Smith is coming off of one of the most dominating seasons in his Late Model career picking up twelve wins and the track championship at the newly opened Dominion Speedway in 2016. Smith elected to return to his home track this season running the new Chevy Spec motor where he collected two wins on the season. Bad luck and bad timing appeared to be what kept him out of the points battle. Smith will make the trek this weekend sans the Chevy Spec motor using the same Chevy built motor he had success with last season.

Brenden Queen, another driver who calls Langley Speedway home, is not out of the hunt with his eighth and second place finishes. Queen comes into the weekend sitting in third place with an average finish of fifth place. Fourteen drivers will be eligible this weekend for the extra bonus money should they make the trip out. With the craziness that is Martinsville, anything can happen at the end of 200 laps. All fourteen drivers and their average finishes are listed here.

 

Front gates will open to fans at 4:00 PM Friday afternoon for practice that will run until 7:00 PM. Pole Qualifying will start approx. 8:00 PM. Registration and the ticket office will open Saturday morning at 11:00 AM with the garage opening at noon. General Admission gates will open at 2:00 PM with an hour-long autograph session scheduled from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. The 25-lap qualifying races will roll off at 4:00 PM with the 200-lap feature race starting approx. 8:00 PM.
