Mike Looney and Greg Edwards Split Twin Features at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway

Hampton, VA – As we get closer and closer to the annual Hampton Heat 200 it was that time of the year Langley Speedway saw a few drivers come from out of town to build a solid notebook. Phillip Morris, Peyton Sellers, Jeff Oakley, and Mike Looney – who actually made his first ever start at the speedway – all made the trip to Hampton to try and tame the flat short track. Mike Looney was the fastest man in town as the sun went down over turn three and grabbed the pole over Peyton Sellers. Phillip Morris, Greg Edwards, and Danny Edwards Jr.

Once the green flag flew, Looney took the lead going down the backstretch with Sellers falling into second. Lap three and Sellers made the move coming out of turn two and went to the inside of Looney to take the lead. Morris looked to follow with Sellers but Looney cut the nose of Morris going into turn three. Morris looked to move Looney again in turn four but this time making contact with Looney’s left rear. Neither car looked to have too much damage. The battle for eighth place also began to heat up as Gracie Trotter looked to hold off a charging Queen. With ten laps on the board Looney dove to the inside of Sellers in turn three and took the lead on corner exit. Morris’ now had a bumper full of Greg Edwards. Looney began to pull away from Sellers who now had Morris and Greg in his tracks as he had a slip in turn two.

With multiple attempts to get past Sellers, it took Morris until lap 22 before he finally got around him for second. Greg also made the pass on Sellers moving him to fourth. By this time Looney had a half a straightaway lead over the field. Danny made his way around Hall for the fifth position but Hall has perfected the crossover maneuver and took fifth right back. With Morris and Greg battling for second, Looney’s lead grew to a full straightaway. Lap traffic was a big factor between Morris and Greg as Greg went to make a pass on the inside but Morris used it as a blocker causing Greg to slow up to get around the lap car. Clear of lap traffic, Morris was able to close the gap to Looney to a half a straightaway once again. Lap 40 and Greg made a bold move on Morris and took second away. After starting strong, Sellers now had to fend off Hall for the fourth position. A three-car battle heated up for the seventh position between Queen, Trotter, and Oakley. Queen looked to the inside of Trotter multiple times, but she was able to fend off all attempts.

The second caution came with twenty laps to go, this time for Queen coming to a stop in turn three. The green flag came out and once again Looney took the point but a caution came out again for debris on the front stretch. On the restart, Looney continued his streak of great starts and held the lead. Morris went to second with Hall to third. Greg fell all the way back to sixth on the restart. With just five laps to go, Hall looked to the inside of Morris in turn for and moved him up the track to take second. Sellers and Greg were both also able to get past Morris for the position.

The checkered flag flew with Mike Looney picking up his first ever win at Langley Speedway in his first ever start. Connor Hall, Peyton Sellers, Greg Edwards, and Phillip Morris rounded out the top five finishers.

With an eight invert from race number one, Jeff Oakley was put on the pole. Woody Howard, Danny Edwards Jr, Phillip Morris, and Greg Edwards filled the top five. When the green flag flew, Howard got a great start and jumped to the point. Morris fell in line in second, move Oakley to third. Oakley did not get the start he wanted and Danny took advantage of that as well and took third away. It’s well known that Langley is a one-groove racetrack in recent years so to be able to run the outside line; you must be doing something right. That’s just what Mike Looney did as he used the outside to power past Oakley for fourth. First lead change of the race came on lap 5 as Morris got to the inside of Howard in turn four and got by him.

Oakley continued to fall through the field as Hall also used the outside line to get past him. Greg then went to the inside of Oakley and passed him as well. Oakley was now in sixth. Howard looked to get the lead back from Morris as he dove to the inside of Morris in turn two and battled to turn three. Howard made big contact with Morris sending both cars up the track and allowing Danny to take the lead on lap 12. After that contact Morris fell to fifth and Howard fell to third. Looney was able to make his way from eighth to second in only 15 laps with no cautions.

Battles throughout the field began to heat up as drivers began to get impatient. Greg got past Morris for fifth and Hall was able to get past Howard for third on lap 17. After Danny was able to put a slim lead on the field, Looney was able to catch him on lap 22. Looney made the move to the inside of Danny in turn four and took the lead on lap 23. Greg made his way past Howard for the fourth position as Hall looked to gain some ground on Danny in second. After having to start at the rear of the field for a tire change, Peyton Sellers made his way up to the seventh place. After starting on the pole, Oakley fell all the way to ninth place.

Lap 30 and Sellers worked his way past Morris for the sixth position. Then on lap 34, Greg was able to get to Halls back bumper to take third place. Hall looked to pull off one of his crossover moves coming out of turn two, but Greg drove Hall to the bottom of the track almost into the grass down the backstretch. The first caution of the race came out on lap 37 for Morris going for a spin by himself in turn two. Morris came down pit road and changed his right front tire as it looked to be flat.

The green flag flew and Looney did not get a good start at all. Going into turn one he was sideways stacking the field up and allowing Greg to use the outside to take the lead and Danny going to second. Looney held onto third and Sellers was fourth. Hall fell to eighth after getting stacked up on the start. After picking speed back up, Looney was able to quickly catch up to Danny and take second away. Looney then looked to close in on Greg for the lead. An unfortunate turn of events happened for Looney as he was all of a sudden off the pace and brought his machine down pit road and parked his machine. With ten laps to go, Greg had a half a straightaway lead over brother Danny. Morris was able to catch Queen for sixth and went to the inside of him. Queen loves the outside line so Morris was unable to get past him for position.

The checkered flag flew and Greg Edwards picked up his third win of the season at Langley Speedway. Danny Edwards Jr, Peyton Sellers, Connor Hall, and Woody Howard rounded out the top five finishers.
