Garrett Manes Sweeps A Main and Top Dog Feature in Dominion Payroll Services 200

With the Top Dog feature being set by a random pill draw, B-Main runner-up Branden Sanders would be tasked with leading the field to green. Once it was time to get going Sanders car had other ideas and did not get a good start. Manes, however, was ready for the green and jumped out to the lead.

Scott Prillaman, who has been strong in these cars since Arena Racing started, gave him a run for his money on the inside. Prillaman was able to lead a couple laps, beating Garrett to the line by just inches. Manes took a play out of basketball coaches playbook and used the slower back markers as a pick to take sole possession of the lead.

Matt Sanders, who had some issues before the start of the race, fell a lap down early to Manes while Prillaman and Testerman picked up their A-Main battle for a few short laps.

Savannah Nickens and Chase Burrow had a nice little battle for the fourth spot on the racing surface just after lap twenty. Burrow looked to take the position from her when his car snapped loose on corner exit forcing him to chase his machine up the track, losing about five or six car lengths. Burrow regroups and charges back to the rear bumper of Nickens and makes the pass for fourth on lap 25

It wasn’t easy sailing for Manes, however, having to work through some pretty heavy traffic towards the end of the race. A scary moment for the leader while working around some slower traffic, the car broke loose allowing Prillaman to close the gap he had created. With a great recovery, Manes was able to hang onto it and cross the line first to grab his second victory of the night.

We caught up with Garret after the race in victory lane. We asked Garrett about taking the lead in the A-Main when Prillaman and Testerman got into it.

“Honestly I can’t say that I knew they were going to wreck,” Manes told us. “I had a really good idea, though. I kind of just took it easy there in third and ran around there. I was in the right place at the right time.”

Prillaman didn’t make things easy for Manes throughout the night though and really ran him down in the Top Dog.

“Scott was just so much faster than me tonight it wasn’t funny,” Manes said. “He would chase me down from half a track to being right there in ten laps so I knew it was time to go. The top dog race though my guys made an adjustment and the car was wicked loose. I would pull two car lengths and then Scott would be right there again. I would come off the wall and kind of slam into him because I couldn’t hold it. We were just in the right place at the right time.”

Tonight’s sweep was Garrett’s second A-Main & Top Dog sweep of the season. Arena Racing will be back in action next weekend here at the Richmond Coliseum on February 4th then they will return to the Hampton Coliseum for the first time in years on February 18th.

A Main

Camden Testerman, your defending season champion, qualified on the pole earlier in the afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum, rolled off the A-Main on the outside of Scott Prillaman’s #83 due to the pill draw during the fan meet and great. When the green flag flew Testerman and Prillaman went to work racing door to door for the lead. Camden using the topside and the momentum to his advantage, holding off the Prillaman by almost a full car length. Took just seven laps for Testerman to grab sole possession of the race lead with Scott Prillaman hot in his tire tracks.

Just three laps later Prillaman makes contact with Testerman coming to lap ten which sends Testerman around and into the inside wall. Both would have to restart from the rear of the field per Arena Racing rules giving the lead to Manes on the ensuing restart. With little to no challenge on the restart, Manes immediately drove away from the field – Testerman and Prillaman were back up to third by lap 20.

Prillaman was able to get around Testerman with twenty-one laps on the board to take over the third position and immediately sets his sights on Savannah Nickens. Prillaman ultimately is able to get around Nickens to for the second position just seven laps later. It was easy sailing from there on for eventually race winner Garrett Manes as he lapped all but the top four drivers.

B Main

img_0362The B-Main once again witnessed a two-car invert has pole winner Chase Burrow was forced to start outside of Chase Butler. Burrow, who actually qualified within the top five in time, had to start in the B-Main due to Arena Racing rules after moving up from the Youth division to Pro division earlier than normal. Outside or inside, it did not prove to be a problem for Burrow who immediately took the lead using that outside groove.

The yellow flag waived early in this one when the #15 of Blaine Schumann experienced some mechanical issue stalling out of turn two causing the leader and the rest of the field to stack up. At just about the same time the #7 of Nathan Thomas Jr. goes for a spin and lands in the inside retaining tough blocks. Schumann needed a tow off the racing surface – the #92 of Todd Meredith would also need assistance off the racing surface and would not continue.

The B-Main seemed to be the race of attrition as cars started dropping like flies. The best battle of the race was short lived between Buttler, Matt & Branden Sanders. The three would make contact in turn four sending Butler into the wall and both the Sanders into him – Chase Butler was the only one who could not continue.

On the ensuing restart, Nathan Thomas was the only car to take the cone. He was able to hang onto second till lap twenty-six when he got loose off four, he was able to hang onto it but it allowed Matt Sanders to catch his rear bumper. Thomas gets loose again in turn four coming to lap twenty-seven and goes around in front of Matt Sanders – officials moved Matt to the rear, guessing they thought he helped the 7 around – Thomas Jr pulls down pit road unable to continue.

With only three cars to finish out the final twenty laps of racing, Chase Burrow is able to go three for three with B-Main wins and punches his spot into the night’s Top Dog feature.

NASCAR Makes Huge Changes to Raceday Format

·         Races will now consist of three stages, with championship implications in each stage.

·         The top-10 finishers of the first two stages will be awarded additional championship points.

·         The winner of the first two stages of each race will receive one playoff point, and the race winner will receive five playoff points. Each playoff point will be added to his or her reset total following race No. 26, if that competitor makes the playoffs.

·         All playoff points will carry through to the end of the third round of the playoffs (Round of 8), with the Championship 4 racing straight-up at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the title.

·         Championship points following the first two stages will be awarded on a descending scale, with the stage winner receiving 10 points, second receiving 9 points, and so on.

·         The race winner following the final stage will now receive 40 points, second-place will receive 35, third-place 34, fourth-place 33, and so on.

NASCAR Drive for Diversity Announces 2017 Driver Class

(Jan. 25, 2017) – After a season of milestones for NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduates competing across NASCAR national series, the industry’s flagship development program for multicultural and female drivers has announced that six drivers will join its 2017 class. The drivers were selected after a competitive combine held last October at New Smyrna Speedway and will compete for Rev Racing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

The 2017 class features a former NASCAR PEAK Mexico Series champion, the granddaughter of one of the sport’s female pioneers, and NASCAR Drive for Diversity’s first sibling teammates. The drivers will attempt to follow in the footsteps of program graduates and current national series drivers Kyle Larson, Darrell Wallace Jr., and 2016 NASCAR XFINITY Series champion Daniel Suárez.

“Now more than ever, we’re seeing the impact of NASCAR’s development program in producing drivers who excel at the highest echelons of our sport,” said Jim Cassidy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing operations. “There’s a great deal of talent and potential in this year’s class. With the strong foundation that NASCAR Drive for Diversity provides, these drivers will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to elevate their racing careers.”

The 2017 class is led by four returning drivers, Collin Cabre, Jay Beasley, Madeline Crane and Rubén García Jr., who first competed in stock car racing in his native Mexico. Collin’s younger brother, Chase Cabre, joins 16-year-old Macy Causey as this year’s NASCAR Drive for Diversity newcomers. Causey’s grandmother, Diane Teel, was the first woman to compete in a NASCAR XFINITY Series race in 1982.

Rev Racing, the operational arm of NASCAR Drive for Diversity, will field four teams in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and two in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

 

The 2017 NASCAR Drive for Diversity roster features:

Collin Cabre: An impressive second year in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program was highlighted by four top-five and six top-10 finishes and a sixth-place finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship standings. After winning the 2015 season finale at Dover International Speedway, Cabre was named to the 2016-2017 NASCAR Next class. The 23-year-old from Tampa, Florida, will compete in his third season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East with Rev Racing.

Chase Cabre: Cabre, 20, registered 12 race wins in 21 starts in a 600 Mini Sprint Car and is a two-time Fall Brawl Champion at Florida’s Ocala Bullring. In 2016, he averaged a fourth-place finish in races at Hickory Motor Speedway and set two poles during the season. Chase will compete in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East in his rookie season with Rev Racing.

Rubén García Jr.: At age 20, the Mexico City native became the youngest NASCAR PEAK Mexico driver to win the series championship in 2015. García was also part of the NASCAR Next program in both 2015 and 2016. He returns to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East after finishing 10th in the series last season.

Jay Beasley: Beasley, 24, made history in 2013 by becoming the first African-American driver to win a Super Late Model race at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In his first season with the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program in 2014, he earned two top-five and five top-10 finishes in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. He returns to the series for his third season with Rev Racing.

Macy Causey: Causey was honored with the NASCAR Young Racer Award in 2016. The year prior, she won the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Virginia Rookie of the Year Award and earned top rookie honors at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia, where in 1978 her grandmother became the first woman to win a NASCAR-sanctioned race at the track. Causey will compete for Rev Racing in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series.

Madeline Crane: The Georgia native began her career racing Bandoleros at Atlanta Motor Speedway at age 10. Crane, 19, moved into Legend cars, and by the time she was 14 had garnered 59 top-five finishes in 82 starts. Returning for a second season with NASCAR Drive for Diversity, she will compete in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series following two top-five and 12 top-10 finishes in 2016.

 

NASCAR Drive for Diversity aligns drivers with a team of executives, athletic directors, crew chiefs and mentors tasked with helping them achieve career successes, and thus improving their goal of reaching one of the three NASCAR national series.

 

Since it began fielding NASCAR Drive for Diversity cars in 2010, Rev Racing has been one of the most consistent teams in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, registering 17 wins, 65 top-five and 124 top-10 finishes with drivers finishing in the top-10 in points each season.

With his NASCAR XFINITY Series victory at Michigan International Speedway, Suárez was the first Mexican-born driver to win a national series race, and last November he became the first foreign-born driver to win a national series championship. Suárez will make his debut in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series racing for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2017.

 

The 2017 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season opener will take place on Feb. 19 at New Smyrna Speedway, where Rev Racing scored a win with Suárez in 2014.

CARS Tour Announces Road to Bristol Lock in Races at Dominion and Hickory

Cars Pro SeriesMooresville, NC – The Road to Bristol for the CARS Tour will go through two tracks on the 2017 schedule leading up to the Inaugural U.S. Nationals of Short Track Racing at Bristol Motor Speedway on May 19-21, 2017. First, the event at Dominion Raceway on March 25th will give one Super Late Model driver a chance to leave the ultra-fast Virginia track with a top 29 starting position at Bristol in May. Following Dominion, Late Model Stock drivers will get their shot at a top 26 provisional starting spot in Thunder Valley when the tour visits Hickory Motor Speedway on May 6th.

Each of the lock in events are compromised of the new Duel format races and will feature single-car qualifying at each event, with lap one of record-setting the starting field of race one, and lap two of qualifying setting the starting lineup for race two. The driver who has the highest average overall finishing position between the two races will be awarded the Bristol provisional. If a tie occurs with multiple drivers scoring the same average finish, a tie breaker will revert to qualifying results.

“These lock in races play perfectly into our new duel format races. The duel format races with the highest average finisher earning the Bristol provisional, without question opens the door to more competitors having an opportunity to win that golden ticket for the U.S. Nationals in May,” stated CARS Tour Series Director, Chris Ragle. “There’s very much an opportunity for a driver to finish fourth in both races, for example, and earn a starting spot for Bristol. The door is wide open to everyone this way and that’s something we really like and the competitors should too.”

As part of the continued education process of these formats as well as the major events at Bristol, Anderson, and the new Mid-Atlantic Classic on the 2017 schedule, the CARS Tour will host two Facebook Live question and answer sessions open to fans, drivers, owners, and sponsors. The first one will be Monday, January 23rd at 8pm, followed by another one on Wednesday, February 8th at 8pm. These two sessions will lead up to the 3rd Annual CARS Tour Media Night at SRI Performance in Mooresville, NC on Wednesday, March 1st at 7pm.

2016 Snap Shots and Year End Review

year-end-review-photoWow, yet another year as come and gone and boy what a season it provided. 2016 proved to be a year of ups and downs for both the race teams and us here at The Weekly Racer. However, just like most race teams, with some hard work, long nights, and a lot of faith, we were able to pull off some pretty cool things this year. We set out on a mission to grow our audience again and reach more folks that love short track racing and boy let me tell you what, we meet that goal and surpassed it!

TWR hit the road in 2016 with the hopes of visiting some new race tracks and the staff did just that. Dominion Raceway & Virginia Motor Speedway* in Virginia along with Carteret County Speedway, Boman Gray Stadium, and Dixieland Speedway in North Carolina were all new short track shows we brought you to this year. Granted we put a little asterisk next to Virginia Motor Speedway as every time we attempted the trip we got rained out, there is always 2017 though.

2016 saw the rise of Facebook LIVE streaming which TWR took full advantage of bringing our readers as close to the action as wifi and cell service would allow it. The following and request we got for races from those who were most of the time from a different state were truly amazing. Not to mention seeing some of the highest numbers in viewer traffic means we are doing our job to bring you to some of the best short-track racing in the country!

We look forward to 2017 being yet another record year as Eric Church would say. We are excited to bring you monthly podcasts with guests from all over the circuits. New tracks, new series and hopefully new writers with fresh opinions and stories from the sport we love. Bellow are just a few ‘Snap Shots’ from 2016 that we here at The Weekly Racer would like to highlight in no particular order. Louis White Wins the Battle – Brenden Queen Wins the War

Chevy -vs- Ford, Pearson -vs- Petty, Earnhardt -vs- Gordon are just some of the rivalries we have seen over the years in this crazy sport we love. Some forged from nothing while others were forged from the unspoken respect towards each other. Sometimes you just have a difference of opinion or a different viewpoint on a certain incident. Other times it’s just good ole’ Old School -vs- New School.

2016 witness a birth of a new rivalry on the high banks of East Carolina Motorspeedway, amongst those that have continued for years, between two racers, who in our very humble opinion, are not much different other than the year they were born. Louis White of Plymouth, North Carolina has been racing longer than Brenden Queen of Chesapeake, Virginia has been on this earth but when the two came together, it was a battle like no other.

Yes, these two had plenty of run-ins, both literally and figuratively, on the racing surface throughout 2016 but I’m pretty sure they both had the same mentality; Let’s get this championship and don’t let my guys down. Fans and drivers alike witnessed plenty of vinyl exchange on the weekends and words exchange throughout the week. Particularly when the two, along with several others, were involved in one of the wildest wrecks I have seen in my ten plus years going racing.

Our snapshot that we want to take away from these two this year is exactly what’s pictured above. Two men, putting everything on the line for the sport they love for their friends, family, and sponsors, to come together and show each other respect during the last race of the year. Louis White ended up winning the final race of the season – which was actually his second Ronnie Barnett Memorial win – with Queen finishing second the points spread that was enough for Queen to secure the track championship. Though Louis White won the “battle,” Queen was able to win the “war,” Louis White asked Queen to take a victory lap with him. White sporting the checkers and Queen sporting the American flag just like his favorite NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski – which ironically enough is the boyfriend of Louis Whites daughter and father of his grandchild.

 

 

Thrilling K&N East Finish at Dominion Speedway Debut

If there were awards to give out here at The Weekly Racer for best finishes, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East finish at Dominion Raceway on Memorial Day weekend would certainly be among the top contenders. Making their debut at the newly opened 4/10-mile, high banked oval, Spencer Davis and eventual champion Justin Haley put on one hell of a show for the fans in attendance on Memorial Day weekend.

Our snapshot was the last half of the last lap where Justin Haley made every attempt possible to steal the victory away from Davis. In one of the closest finish in K&N East history, Davis edged out Haley by just .005 seconds. Just about everyone in the complex were on their feet as the two entered turn three knowing the shot was coming. The two made contact coming down the front stretch and it was a drag race to the finish line. Easily one of the top finishes we witnessed in 2016.

The sight around the track mirrored much like the Xfinity race at Talladega where two drivers were waiting on the front stretch for NASCAR to review the finish and declare a winner. I cannot imagine what it was like for either of the drivers sitting there, facing each other still strapped in their cars waiting. This race will certainly go down as one of the closest races The Weekly Racer was involved in.

 

Bradley McCaskill’s Road to Recovery Leads to Victory Lane

If you have been following short track racing in the Mid-Atlantic then you know Bradley McCaskill’s journey through 2016 wasn’t the easiest, to say the least. McCaskill was involved in a pretty bad wreck earlier in the summer at East Carolina Motor Speedway that left him with burns all over his body. Spending the rest of summer on the road to recovery it was great news just to hear the McCaskill was able to get back home to his business and more importantly his family. Things didn’t stop there for McCaskill though. With the help from his family, doctors, and some support from the racing community, McCaskill was able to return to what he loved, racing.

Our snapshot is from the Saturday night portion of the Thanksgiving Classic. McCaskill all but dominated the Limited Late Model feature in a car prepared by Louis White and found his way back to victory lane. McCaskill made a very strong statement in his return to Late Model racing, his win came on the heels of not only making it into the prestigious Martinsville race but earning a top twenty finish. To be able to watch McCaskill dominate the way he did and celebrate in victory lane with his family and Louis White should be a reminder to never give up and always keep fighting.

 

Christian Eckes Edges Teammate Josh Berry in Thrilling Last Lap Pass

For the second year in a row, we were able to make the trip down to Myrtle Beach Speedway for the annual Myrtle Beach 400. A “post season” Late Model feature, much like Martinsville and SNMP, bringing some of the best in the business to one track for 200-laps of door-to-door action. We almost picked the entire race as our snapshot with the amount of true racing that was going on throughout the entire field. We figured it would be a good idea to pick just one moment from that weekend for the interest of time.

The last lap battle between JRM teammates Josh Bery and Christian Eckes was one for the record books. If you weren’t there or didn’t see our Tweet after the race we have included the link above for your viewing pleasure. Much like the finish in the K&N series at Dominion, 200-laps of racing came down to just inches as Eckes edged out Berry at the line after the two bounced off of each other. Was truly one of the most thrilling finishes that we have witnessed since being on this side of business.

 

Mike Looney Holds of Late Model Greats to Win Martinsville

If you are a Late Model fan and Martinsville as a whole is not one your annual snapshots then you are doing something wrong. Year after year over eighty cars make their way to the famous paper clip half mile speedway located in Ridgeway, Virginia all with different goals in mind; making the feature, finishing top 20, or winning that famous grandfather clock. It is a race like no other in the Mid-Atlantic and anyone in the racing community understands this. To win here in a Late Model is putting your name down in history.

It was a fairy tale story for Mike Looney this past October when he took the Late Model community by storm. Showing impressive speed during the test session a couple weeks prior to running towards the front all day long. Looney locked himself into the 200-lap feature by winning the pole award the day before. Not something out of the ordinary right? A small team doing everything in their power to make sure they make the show, there is no way they will be competitive come race time. Wrong!

Of course in a 200-lap race, you will have your different leaders as some drivers will push harder at different segments. Mike Looney, however, was like that mosquito bite that will just never go away. Keeping his car in one piece, for the most part, all day long and being a factor there at the end. This is like a three-part snapshot if you will for us here at The Weekly Racer. The first coming from the somewhat shock of Looney winning the pole, followed by the run he gave previous race winner Lee Pulliam there at the end when the two made contact, followed by the knee he took next to his car in victory lane

 

 

Nick Smith’s Twelve Win Season Earns Him Dominion Speedways Very First Title

To win a race in a Late Model Stock Car here in the Mid-Atlantic is one thing, to win twelve of them en route to your first Late Model championship is something else. Nick Smith did just that this year at newly opened Dominion Raceway located in Thornburg, Virginia. Averaging more than eighteen cars on a given weekend it wasn’t always cake and ice cream so to speak for the Hampton, Virginia driver. Racing with the likes of Jeff Oakley, Trent & Doug Barnes, along with a few visits from 2016 NWAAS National Champ Matt Bowling.

Some wins were pure domination, others probably had a lot to do with luck, and a few ended in the tech shed. However, the moment for us that made this a memorable snapshot was the moment pictured above, the moment you figure out you are the champion. See, the final race of the season was an interesting one at Dominion Raceway. It was a total of 150-laps broken down into three segments along with two different inverts – something we haven’t really seen done in Late Model racing before. Even though Nick Smith was unable to win that particular battle that evening and bring his win total to thirteen, he was able to score enough points to secure the very first Dominion Raceway championship.

The moment the announcement was made the champagne went flying and Smith was able to celebrate with his family, friends, and crew.
