Thornburg, VA – After a week of people talking about possible tire issues at Dominion Raceway multiple American Racer officials were on hand for the longest race of the season. Eighteen cars qualified with two others joining the field after having early race day problems. National points leader Matt Bowling ran a 15.375 second lap to sit on top. Before the race started they did an invert putting young Macy Causey up front from fourth position.

A lap after taking the green flag track points leader Nick Smith gets around her while it took a little longer for Bowling to get around Travis Miller. Five laps in and it was Smith, Causey, Bowling, and Miller up front. The Barnes brothers put on a good battle for 6th with Doug getting ahead ten laps in. Macy was able to stay close to Smith for the run. Cliff Daniels ended his night early just 15 laps in with some damage to his car.

Twenty laps in and the top six drivers started to hit lapped traffic, and Bowling would fall back to fifth possibly saving his tires for the long race while Smith and Causey kept pushing hard. A lap later it was very clear that this was not the case as Bowling was almost passed be everyone on the lead lap. The race kept on with no caution while Bowling pitted and they popped the hood off looking over everything. His night would end on a sour note as his front right tire was punctured, possibly from debris from Daniels car. On the track there was a ton of fluid laid down and a caution came out as the crews tried to clean it all up.

There was a little battle or fourth through seventh before the halfway break but it saved anyone from getting passed. Nick Smith pitted leading 74 of the 75 laps and Macy Causey was close to him for most of them.

On the restart Macy tried out the high line but had a bad start causing the drivers behind her to check up. She was able to fall in line behind Smith and Miller and wasted no time getting by Miller to hunt down Smith again. Owen Smith cruised down pit road with 65 laps to go with an ill sounding car. With 60 laps to go Causey started running quicker times than leader, cutting about a tenth off every lap, but Smith just turned up his throttle a little more to keep the gap. David Polenz, Robert Bruce, and Grayson Cullather had a great battle for seventh through ninth. Cullather slipped by Bruce for 8th and Nick Smith started hitting lapped traffic again.

Owen Smith spun out with 36 laps to go as he and Eddie Johnson were about to be lapped. On the restart Macy couldn’t get going again and fell to third behind Miller. A big pile up happened on the back stretch with those three who were battling earlier and an altercation happened between Bruce’s crew and some others on the back stretch area. Bruce and Polenz cars were trashed. Another restart and Macy tried the outside again but falls to fourth with Nick Smith running away from the field. Doug Barnes Jr in third place started to pressure Miller for second with Macy about a car length back.

The race would cruise to the finish with Nick out front by over a second in front of the field. No tire issues came up and the American Racer officials checked over everyone at the halfway break and end of the race. I asked Nick about his winning ways at Dominion while Langley is idle, he commented “It feels good. My hometrack Langley isn’t open I’m not real proud about that, but I am glad I got to come here and run at this track its a really awesome place to race. I have a lot of fun here it fits my driving style, i think it fits a lot of people driving style its really fast, got a lot of room so I think a lot of people like the place”. Smith didn’t know he’d be so dominant either, “I didnt know what was gonna happen. We’ve ran 150 laps in a night but not all at once. We are constantly learning and it ended up working in our favor.”

With Matt Bowling ending up 115 laps down and only a point lead over Keith Rocco and a three point lead over Ty Majeski the team loaded up quick and left after the race to hit up the shop and get to some more races. On Friday he ran twins at Anderson Motor Speedway and on Saturday and Sunday he ran twins at Southern National and East Carolina where he splits wins both days with Tyler Matthews.
