Whelen Southern Mod News & Notes: South Boston

img_0174DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour returns to South Boston Speedway this Saturday for the South Boston 150. One driver that’s looking forward to coming back to the historic track is Andy Seuss.

The two-time defending champion enters the race as the only driver with multiple wins at the tight .4-mile track. Seuss won the inaugural Whelen Southern Modified Tour event in 2009 and backed that up with wins in 2014 and last September.

Seuss currently sits nine points out of the championship lead behind Burt Myers (90) and George Brunnhoelzl III (84), who have split the first two race wins this season. Myers won the opener at Caraway Speedway and Brunnhoelzl last Saturday at Concord Speedway.

Kyle Ebersole, the South Boston fall 2014 victor, joins Seuss and Brunnhoelzl as the only previous race winners entered at South Boston. He’ll look to rebound after motor issues ended his night early last week at Concord.

Seuss, Brunnhoelzl and Jason Myers are the only drivers in the field who have started all previous nine southern modified races held at the track since 2009.

South Boston 150 Notes
Burt Myers Seeks South Boston Breakthrough: Although he’s recorded top 10s in all eight of his previous starts at South Boston, points leader Burt Myers feels he must finish better this weekend if he wants to leave Virginia with the championship lead. His best career finish at South Boston is third in both 2009 and this race last year. His worst finish there was eighth in 2010.

Bohn Returns With New Team: Danny Bohn has already captured two poles at South Boston and finished fifth in this race last year. He returns Saturday driving for Fleming Family Racing looking to get his first win driving for the new team.

Gerstner Looks for Another Strong Finish at South Boston:
Jeremy Gerstner was one of the most consistent drivers behind Andy Seuss and George Brunnhoelzl III during the second half of last season, highlighted by a strong fifth-place showing in the fall race at the Virginia track. Gerstner will attempt to score his seventh top-10 finish in his last eight starts this weekend.

Home Tracks: Bowling Off to Hot Start at South Boston
After winning a pair of 100-lap features to open the season followed a second-place showing last time out, Matt Bowling has shown everyone he’s quickly becoming the driver to beat this season in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition at South Boston Speedway. Bowling holds a 128-102 lead in the track standings over Austin Thaxton, who won the most recent late model race at the historic track. Bowling will look to add to his lead this weekend as the track will host twin 75-lap features along with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.
