Get Ready To Rumble – Whelen Southern Mods Return To Langley Speedway
Hampton, VA – They’re back!!! That’s right, the Southern Modified tour rolls through, or should I say rumbles through our home town of Hampton, Virginia for their second visit to the flat track of Langley Speedway! The Bayport Credit Union 150 presented by Budweiser is the eighth stop on the tour and the final time this year the Mods visit Langley Speedway.
Burt Myers, who currently trails younger brother Jason by just two points for the lead, comes into this weekend as the only repeat winner in the five year span that Langley has hosted races. Matter of fact the entire top five – the Myers brothers, Seuss, Ebersole, and Bertuccio – enters this weekend separated by just 12 points. Four time series champion George Brunnhoelzl, looking to bounce back after a lack luster finish at Bristol, sits just 18 points out of the lead in sixth.
This will be the first time the Modified’s have been on the track since the patches of pavement were added to the turns at Langley Speedway. A curve ball that could be thrown at all the teams this go round. Will it cause drivers to be extra cautious in the corners and discourage side by side racing? Will it set up for another record breaking qualifying run (Track Record: Ryan Preece – 14.675 (97.145) April 2014)? Only time will tell as these machines will look to put a ton of rubber down during their hour long practice session.
Who To Watch:
Burt Myers: Already etching a mark in he win column at Langley Speedway this year, and being the first driver to double dip at the .395 mile flat track, Myers is looking to bounce back from engine troubles that plagued him at Bristol. He has already proved that he knows how to work his way through the field and around adversity at Langley Speedway.
Kyle Ebersole: The youngest driver to find his way into “the box” at Langley Speedway was one of the fastest cars all day in practice back in April. It wasn’t just a fluke either; Ebersole running up front all night finished second Burt Myers. However, if we had seen a late race caution I personally believe it could have been a completely different story.
George Brunnhoelzl, III: Certainly no stranger to victory in the NWMST. A record holding 4-time series champion certainly knows how to pilot his 700+ horsepower machine around Langley Speedway. Was on track to be the first repeat winner in Langley history until what I would call a last lap pass from Myers to steal the win a year ago! No stranger to the front, no stranger to victory lane, make sure to keep an eye out for GB3.
Andy Seuss: Another driver on the circuit that you cannot rule out to see at the end of the night, no matter what track they pull into. Seuss already has a win (2011), a pole (2013) and an average finish of fifth place with 147 laps lead since the series ran at Langley Speedway. Coming off a fourth place finish at Langley in April & a sixth place finish at the combined event in Bristol, look for Seuss to keep his #11 Northeast Race Cars/Ideal Finance Chevrolet rolling into victory lane at the end of the night.
