New Name Sits At The Top Of The Late Model National Points Standings

AnthonyAndersSo within the past 24 hours NASCAR has released the first look into the NWAAS Div. I national points standings. For the first time in about 29 straight weeks we have a new face leading the top 500 late-model stock cars throughout the country! Anthony Anders (#36) of Easley, South Carolina has a pretty commanding lead (148 points) over second place contender Dillon Basset, Jr. Anders so far has 16 starts, 8 wins, 14 T-5’s and 15 T-10’s for a total of 518 points. Anders will look to continue adding to his points lead at tracks like Hickory, Greenville and Anderson. Anders told NASCAR that he and the team will focus on the national points this year and understand that means one thing… WINNING RACES!

Second spot belongs to a young man we had the pleasure of seeing take the checkered flag at East Carolina Motor Speedway IMG_3050( With 2014 being Bassett’s first full year competing in a Late Model to debut second in the national standings of 500 drivers sounds like a good gig to me. So far this year Bassett has 12 total starts, coming from Caraway, Greenville, Anderson, East Carolina. I would look for Bassett to make some noise this season as he his hungry for victory lane. In a post race interview Bassett informed us he will be looking to run at most of the big races this yea. He may not have planned on running for a national title this year but with his current position you would have to think something like that is fresh on his mind!

Sitting third with 14 starts, 1 win, 6 T-5’s, 10 T-10’s and 323 points is PostSouthern National Motorsports Park regular and featured Driver Series driver Tommy Lemons, Jr. So far in 2014 Lemons has made starts at Motor Mile, Southern National, South Boston, and Caraway. With 14 starts so far this season Lemons, Jr has just one win with 6 T-5’s & 10 T-10’s helping his case.  Lemons will look to add two more notches in the win column this year as Southern National will host race number three in the dirty dozen series with Twin-75s this Saturday during Mom’s the Bomb 320.

LeePulliamA very familiar face in the national points is Lee Pulliam currently sitting in 4th place with 310 points! What has impressed me is with his 10 starts Pulliam has already collected 6 wins! The start of Pulliam’s 2014 season had a lot of focus towards his K&N Pro East gig, unfortunately the #11 Hattori Racing team has since been shut down. Pulliam was picked up by TopGun Motorsports to run a limited schedule in the Pro series. With Lee now running a limited touring schedule look for Pulliam to climb is way back up to the top spot as we get deeper into the summer.

Rounding out the top 5 in the national points is former Hampton Heat 200 winner and defending Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown champ Matt MattBowlingBowling (the showdown was a non points race). Bowling who runs most of his races at Caraway, Motor Mile and South Boston this year. With 10 official points Bowling has not been able to collect his first points win, however, he has not finished outside the top five this year this season. Bowling & Pulliam go into this weekend tied at 310 points a piece, Pulliam given the advantage because of the wins.

Other drivers to receive an honorable mention from us here at The Weekly Racer; Sitting 21st in points is the 08 of Deac McCaskill (Motor Mile, Southern National, South Boston, East Carolina), so far in 2014 McCaskill has 12 total starts with 4 wins, plenty of top 5’s & 10’s with 180 points. P39 Driver Series driver Brenden Queen (Southern National, South Boston, Langley) w/ 148 points. P 53 Keith Campbell(R) (Salina) w/ 125 points. P63 another featured driver on our website, Greg Edwards (Langley) with only 4 starts Edwards already has 2 wins, sitting at 120 points. P66 is fellow Langley Speedway 2014 multi feature winner Matt Waltz with 4 starts and 2 wins as well w/ 118 points. Burt Myers sits P83 while running at Bowman Gray Stadium with 3 starts and 2 wins in those starts, right now Myers sits at 102 points.
