- Stony Brook def. Albany 31-28

- James Madison def. Kentucky 20-17
- Old Dominion def Norfolk State 35-18
Saturday December 3, 2011 will host all 8 games of the 2011 FCS Playoff’s. With all four bubble teams playing top 5 ranked schools. #22 Stony Brook has the mountainous task of playing at #1 Same Houston State. #15 Central Arkansas will travel to #4 Montana. #17 James Madison plays at #2 North Dakota State. Finally your #10 Old Dominion Monarchs travel to #3 Georgia Southern. (Sports Network/FatHead.com)
Old Dominion will pack its bags and head south to take on #3 nationally ranked Georgia Southern University Eagles this weekend. GSU finished their season with an identical record of the Monarchs at 9-2, and going 7-1 in the Southern Conference winning the outright championship over former national champion App. State. The same team to hand GSU their first regular season and only conference loss in 2011.
Georgia Southern commands a Triple Option style offense. To be able to run this type of offense you must have a QB with the ability to run down field and pick up the defensive schemes on the fly. It allows for a hand off to the FB, RB, or keeping the ball himself. Going back in Old Dominion history, the Monarchs have run across this style once before. In their second year back on the grid iron ODU took on Cal Poly who also ran the triple option. ODU lost by 13 points that day giving up over 500 yards of total offense. Has ODU learned its lesson, the team has certainly grown and improved since then. Will ODU’s high power, no huddle offense be enough to clip the wings on the Eagles season?
Looking at both teams schedules they have their goods and their bad. Georgia Southern only played two teams that were ranked within the FCS polls. However you will always get that person why will argue all day that they scheduled a BCS team. This year it was none other than #3 Alabama…. a team in the hunt for the National BCS title. So does it really matter you scheduled the team? I don’t think this should factor in the team’s strength of schedule. ODU on the other hand played four teams of FCS national rank, with one of those teams moving to the BCS next year. ODU went 2-2 against FCS ranked opponents. Pointing out one of those games was a last minute defensive mismatch that was probably the biggest let down in Monarchs history
Will Old Dominion be able to pull off what would be an upset and continue their monster run? Does the loss to Cal Poly last year help provide fuel to the fire under the Monarchs? Or will Georgia Southern and their 6 prior National Championships be too much for ODU to handle
Looking forward to the end of the game; does an Old Dominion win solidify their presence in the FCS ranks? Also if ODU loses the battle will everyone say that it is okay, the program was only in their third year? Let me know your thoughts, opinions, and views on the game.
