ODU in the Playoffs!
Sunday November 20th 2011 was a historical day for the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Monarchs were selected to be apart of the 2011 FCS Playoffs. ODU arguably the best start up football team in years finished the regular season with an impressive 9-2 (6-2). Since restarting the football program the Monarchs have gone 26-7 over a three year period.
2011 was the first year playing in the CAA where the #10 Monarchs finished in a three way tie for second place within the conference. 2011 marked another accomplishment for the #10 Monarchs breaking into the top 25 polls for FCS schools, however this was not enough. Having got a taste of success the team never looked back wining there final four games of the season. Knocking of #9 James Madison in what was on of the best games in recent Monarch history. Catapulting the Monarchs to #10 in the Sports Network Poll, highest they have been all season.
The Spartans of Norfolk State come into this weekends game with an identical 9-2 (7-1) record. Earning the automatic bid by winning the MEAC conference title. Dropping only to BCS contender #19West Virginia and conference rival Bethune-Cookman. 2011 was the first time in school history Norfolk State has won the MEAC crown, and Saturday will be their first appearance in the FCS Playoffs along with the first time these schools have meet.
The #10 Monarchs return to the gridiron this Saturday, November 26, 2011 to face inner city Norfolk State in the first round. The game is set to kick off at 1:30pm with the Monarchs hosting at Forman Field at S.B Ballard Stadium. The weekend is shaping up to be a beauty. Partly cloudy with high’s in the 60’s. The winner of this match up is set to face #3 Georgia Southern the winner of the Southern Conference December 3rd at Georgia Southern.
